Speaking during a panel at ATX TV Festival, Ryan Condal detailed the massive undertaking behind House of the Dragon Season 3. The production reportedly spanned 314 shooting days and involved hundreds of performers, large-scale practical sets, and extensive effects work to create the naval conflict that opens the season.

“So much of this [first] episode is practical,” Condal said. “You’re in the water; there are multiple ships interacting that are real physical sets, and the fire and the dragons and all these things knitted together just seem like it’s all happening in the same place at the same time,” said Ryan Condal at ATX TV Festival over the weekend.

According to Ryan Condal, the challenge was making medieval naval w****** feel authentic without relying on traditional gunpowder-based combat. The team utilized specially designed ship rigs, water tanks, and practical interactions to recreate close-quarters battles involving boarding actions, collisions, and dragon attacks. The showrunner even suggested that from a filmmaking perspective, the premiere may rank among the most technically demanding episodes the franchise has ever attempted.
