The Marvel Cinematic Universe may be heading toward one of its most emotionally layered rivalries yet. During a recent discussion tied to Avengers: Doomsday, the Russo Brothers revealed that the dynamic between Doctor Doom and Steve Rogers will echo the ideological divide that once fueled Captain America: Civil War.

Their comments instantly sparked conversation among Marvel fans, especially because Civil War remains one of the MCU’s most debated stories, with audiences still divided over whether Tony Stark or Steve Rogers had the stronger perspective. The filmmakers hinted that Avengers: Doomsday will revisit that same emotional complexity, only this time through Steve Rogers and Doctor Doom.

Speaking during the Agboverse Exclusive conducted by Agbo Films, the Russo Brothers explained that the emotional core of Avengers: Doomsday will not rely on a simple hero-versus-villain formula. Instead, they suggested the conflict will revolve around deeply human flaws, unresolved ambitions, and competing ideals, much like the tension that defined Civil War.

“Tony Stark and Steve Rogers remain very empathetic and rootable and you’ll see to this day people are divided over who was more relatable in that film [Civil War].

It’s very much this sort of unresolved aspirations of those characters and flaws of those characters. It continues to unfold as we move into Doomsday.”

The statement has already fueled speculation about how Doctor Doom will be portrayed in the upcoming film. Rather than presenting him as a one-dimensional threat, the Russos appear to be setting up a more emotionally grounded rivalry where audiences may genuinely understand both sides. That approach could give Avengers: Doomsday the same kind of emotional tension that helped make Civil War one of Marvel’s most discussed films years after release.

That growing curiosity around Doomsday has also been reflected by actors involved with the massive crossover event, including Pedro Pascal, who recently opened up about the surreal atmosphere surrounding the production.

Pedro Pascal says filming Avengers: Doomsday felt surreal

While promoting The Mandalorian and Grogu on Good Morning America on May 11, 2026, Pedro Pascal shared a vivid glimpse into the atmosphere surrounding the production of Avengers: Doomsday. According to Pascal, the experience felt almost unreal as cast members dressed in partial superhero costumes casually moved around between scenes.

“I remember I took a phone call and we are all at what would be called base camp,” Pascal recalled.

“And I am sitting there and talking, but looking around and seeing all of like varying Avengers in half costumes, going to the bathroom, walking around, and it felt like some kind of Avengers retreat or home,” he said. The person on the receiving end of the phone call was even painted a picture, less of the scene and more of Pascal's disbelief.

The actor is widely expected to play Reed Richards as Marvel launches its new Fantastic Four era, making his role in Doomsday one of the MCU’s most closely watched additions. At the same time, Pascal is preparing to return as Din Djarin in The Mandalorian and Grogu, reprising the fan-favorite role that became a major force in Disney’s streaming success.

With the Russo Brothers teasing emotionally complicated character dynamics and Pascal describing the massive crossover environment behind the scenes, Avengers: Doomsday is continuing to position itself as one of Marvel’s biggest cinematic events yet. The repeated comparisons to Civil War have only heightened curiosity about how audiences may react once the film finally arrives.
