I Am Legend stands as one of Will Smith's most iconic sci-fi performances, delivering a gripping post-apocalyptic narrative that resonated with audiences worldwide in 2007. The film's massive success spawned immediate sequel discussions.

Yet years after its announcement, the project remains one of Hollywood's most anticipated follow-ups. Fans await Robert Neville's return alongside Michael B. Jordan in a continuation that uses the original's alternate ending.

Despite the enthusiasm, the screenwriter has encountered major obstacles.

I Am Legend 2's screenwriter Akiva Goldsman has offered a candid update on the long-developing sequel, admitting that the project has encountered several roadblocks. Speaking to Radio Times, the screenwriter made it clear that those difficulties have not convinced him to walk away.

“I have run up against a series of obstacles that I refuse to allow to defeat me,” Goldsman said. The writer also confirmed that work continues behind the scenes.

“We’re pressing on. We’re trying,” Goldsman told Radio Times, signaling that the sequel remains an active project despite its lengthy development.

There is also a lighter promise attached to the return. Goldsman has ruled out another canine tragedy after audiences reacted intensely to Sam's death in the 2007 film. He recalled test screenings where viewers walked out after the German Shepherd's fate, despite the movie having already depicted humanity's devastation. His solution is straightforward: no dogs will die in the sequel.

The story itself will follow the alternate ending released on DVD, where Neville survives. Goldsman previously confirmed that this version is being treated as canon, allowing Smith's character to return without undoing the theatrical finale within the sequel's continuity.

That alternate ending gives the long-awaited sequel a very different foundation, and its creative team has also gained a director to carry that vision forward.

Steven Caple Jr. is officially attached to direct I Am Legend 2. The filmmaker previously directed Creed II and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, bringing experience with both character-driven action and large-scale franchise filmmaking. Caple Jr. confirmed his involvement in April 2026 during an interview with Collider.

Will Smith is set to reprise Dr. Robert Neville, while Michael B. Jordan remains attached in an undisclosed role. Smith and Jordan are also involved as producers alongside Goldsman and other production partners. There is currently no official release date for I Am Legend 2, and production timing remains unclear.

Additional casting and filming details have also yet to be announced. For now, Goldsman's latest comments offer the clearest message possible: the sequel has faced serious obstacles, but the writer remains determined to see Robert Neville's story continue.
