Roseanne Barr is making a major Hollywood comeback with a brand new sitcom, eight years after her firing. Since 2018, the comedian has kept busy with stand-up and a podcast, while the television industry has kept its phone silent. A fired star with no network home usually fades into trivia questions. Barr, however, appears to have read a different script, one where the final scene is a long, loud victory lap.

While most comebacks arrive quietly, this one brings a title, a cast list, and a grandmother who stockpiles for doomsday.

Roseanne Barr will headline a comedy series called Meemaw, according to Page Six. ABC canceled her rebooted sitcom Roseanne in 2018 over an offensive social media post. That reboot still ranked third in television ratings that year.

“Every bit as revolutionary as the Roseanne show, if not more,” Barr said of Meemaw.

She then added, “I thought now would be a great time for people to actually hear from a Jew.”

According to Page Six, Barr plays a fiercely patriotic prepper grandma in Meemaw with a mixed-race family who sets out to save America, take down a criminal empire, and throw her granddaughter the perfect Bat Mitzvah. Randy Quaid, 76, plays her husband, while Drea de Matteo, 54, plays her daughter, and Jon Lovitz and Tony Hinchcliffe also round out the cast. Barr insists the series will poke fun at everybody, not only progressives.

While Meemaw promises equal-opportunity teasing, the original Roseanne writers’ room ran on far frostier energy and a lot less laughter.

Why Roseanne Barr clashed with the Roseanne writers’ room

Chuck Lorre worked on Roseanne in the early 1990s, and he now describes a writers’ room that never learned to relax. Speaking on a recent podcast hosted by Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Lorre said Roseanne Barr fundamentally hated that other people wrote the words she would say. A stand-up comedian who built her career on her own material and voice, she treated a writing staff like uninvited guests at her own party.

Lorre also made clear that the tension was never personal, because any writing staff would have faced the same hurdle. Television needs a whole team, he noted, since nobody can pull off a series alone. He called feeding lines to a stand-up comedian a deeply flawed premise that very few comics can handle successfully. Hollywood has finally reopened its doors for Barr, and Meemaw is already walking straight through it.
