'Rooster' Episode 2 Recap: Did Greg Stop Katie from Resigning?

Published 03/17/2026, 9:22 AM CDT

The second episode of the HBO dramedy Rooster, titled Trousers, picks things up right after the fire - both literal and metaphorical - at the end of episode 1. There is Steve Carell again as Greg, trying to cheer Katie up, who is clearly in denial right now of how serious things have gotten, and that she can even face charges for arson. Obviously, not in her right mind, she is behaving a bit off, making it seem like nothing affects her now, while Greg tries his best to deal with the situation calmly.

His first task right now is to take Katie down to the Police Station to give her statement about what happened. His cheerful approach to things while dealing with the aftermath of a chaotic mess is not exactly the type of thing you see happening in real life, which makes it funny to watch. Getting his daughter ready to go to the Police Station and asking her to insist that what happened was an accident in her statement seemed like a task he was subtly failing at.

Despite his efforts, things did not go as planned at the station, just like always, and that is where the episode really took off.

Rooster episode 2: Arson, is “not” a verb

Greg and Katie reach the station where Archie is already present. The officer, whom we have already met in the first episode, is sitting with them to record her statement. While she is telling everyone how Archie's house caught fire, the only thing that affected him the most in all of this was her torching his prized Leo Tolstoy book, War and Peace. She even said it burned so good just to rub it in.

This slightly serious but funny banter was broken up by an even more stupid line by the goofy police officer, who recorded in the statement that she did arson a book. The scene becomes hilarious when Steve Carell tries to correct him, saying he cannot use arson as a verb, and everyone else just follows as the officer adamantly stands by his assertion while sneakily checking on the phone if he is right or not.

The scene eventually ends with Katie punching Archie for being a narcissist yet again. He pins the blame for his cheating on the way Katie treated him in the relationship, and conveniently forgives her for that and for burning down his house. In exchange, he wanted her to find it in herself to forgive him, too. Well, we already know how that went.

The Police Station scene was again a perfect concoction of serious conversations balanced by some really funny moments, which gives way for things to really unfold for the second episode.

Greg tries to make things right for Katie

After what happened, Katie is done with the place, and no one can blame her, as after so much public humiliation, one would want to leave and have a fresh start elsewhere. That is exactly the plan here, but Greg tries to talk her out of this hasty decision. He not only tries to reason with her but also goes behind her back to see Walt and request that he not fire Katie.

However, it turns out Katie has already handed in her resignation and is ready to leave everything behind her. Greg somehow convinces Walt not to act on Katie’s resignation, just not yet, but Walt wants some juicy “goss” in return. So, Greg tells him how Professor Dylan finds him charming, and that does it for Walt.

With Walt on board now, Greg’s sole mission is to get Katie to realise how much she loves this place and that she should fight for it. He gets some friendly advice from Dylan on his situation, which gives the impression that things are finally thawing between them. After their last conversation, there was this cold air of awkwardness between them, but that seems to have passed now.

Well, Greg acts on her advice and is willing to do whatever it takes to keep his daughter from making a decision she will later regret.

Greg cuts a deal with Walt

While he is busy convincing Katie not to quit, Greg makes a deal with Walt to accept her back to the college. Walt just wants an apology letter from her and Greg to accept the Writer in Residence gig. A big commitment for Greg, as he only wanted to make things right for Katie and go back to his life in Florida. But it is for his daughter’s career, and he just reluctantly accepts the offer.

All that is now left for him is to get Katie to agree to take back her job. In that effort, Greg steals the weather vane cock after Katie tells him that she always wanted to do that. It is a tradition at the Ludlow College where a professor hides the cock, and the students have to find it. And if they are successful, all of them get a day off. So, Greg wants to give his daughter a chance to be a part of this silly tradition as a last-ditch effort to overturn her decision.

Elsewhere, Archie has been going through something of his own, and it ends up in a funny way, not for him, of course.

Archie just can’t catch a break

As things are going on with Greg and Katie, simultaneously, we see Archie having troubles with navigating the wild currents of his life. After getting out of the police station, he goes to see his girlfriend, Sunny, whom he has knocked up. Archie gets a shock when she tells him that she decided to keep the baby and that she would like it if he got on board with her decision.

Archie is obviously perplexed by this revelation, as he did not want this in the first place. He was hoping to get back with Katie, but instead, things are going downhill for him now. However, he catches a break, or at least he thinks he has, when an old friend offers him a chance to be interviewed by the BBC for his expert opinion on the US-Russia relationship.

He is more than excited about the prospect and even asks for help from his girlfriend to look presentable for the interview. While getting ready, they both get into what happened with Archie and Katie, and it is eventually pointed out that he has quite a few flaws. But Sunny also acknowledges that underneath his narcissistic personality, there is a lovable man somewhere, and that is what she likes about him.

Their conversation ends, Archie is feeling good and ready for the interview, and things are starting to look up for him. But not so easily!

Not a goodbye, more like a see you soon

Greg’s efforts somehow get Katie to agree to stay, and they go on to write an apology letter to Walt together. They both share a great moment writing the letter, sharing a laugh or two, but things come crashing down when, accidentally, Katie reveals that Archie has, in fact, got Sunny pregnant - a fact to which Greg was oblivious right until now.

In a fit of rage, he breaks into Archie’s hotel room and starts beating him with a ladle right when he is in the middle of his BBC interview. Not that getting beaten in front of the whole world is funny, but what is more hilarious is him getting beaten in his undies while the whole world is watching.

Archie ultimately got what he deserved for being an idiot, but he goes on to make another decision that seems to be a big mistake. He takes Sunny up on her previous offer and moves in with her and her roommate, who clearly hates him. That dynamic would be fun to watch in later episodes.

The episode ends with Greg saying his goodbyes to his daughter, and Katie thanking him for his support, but we know he is not really going, cause we already know of his deal with Walt, of which Katie is unaware. While getting into the taxi, he says goodbye and quickly says that he will see her on Monday.

Katie seems to be baffled at what he might be implying here, and the episode ends here. This was another funny episode, taking the madness of episode 1 and turning it up a notch. Now, a new journey begins for Greg, and the audience seems all hooked for the ride.
