Robert Pattinson Reveals How He Became Jennifer Lawrence’s “Useless” Husband in ‘Die My Love'

Die My Love might appear heavy on screen, but behind the cameras, not so much. From Martin Scorsese's book club to having every critic sing its praises, Robert Pattinson and Jennifer Lawrence's new movie has captivated the whole world. In the process of telling the story of a woman's descent into madness after childbirth, unrest, and a torn marriage, the duo delivered performances layered with unfathomable emotions. However, the film’s making seems to be incredibly laid back as Pattinson remembered how Lawrence nonchalantly proposed him the part.

Critics and the audience in the theatre have leaned forward in the stillness, captivated by the film's pull. But Lawrence's smooth offer stole the show.

Robert Pattinson and Jennifer Lawrence have crossed paths several times in their careers, but Die My Love is the first time their creative synergy has blossomed. Speaking to VMagazine, Pattinson revealed the strange yet casual way in which Lawrence, who is a producer on the film, offered him the role of her "utterly useless" husband. He said, "I was literally talking to her about something else, and she just said, 'Oh, by the way, do you want to play my husband in this Lynne Ramsay movie?'" which left him pleasantly perplexed.

Pattinson recalled a drought of good scripts at that time, echoing his pre-Mickey 17 sentiments that almost made him quit acting, telling the outlet how Die My Love was not on his radar and he was in a very "strange place" at that time, wondering, ‘Why are there no cool jobs?’" He went to praise Lawrence's phenomenal trajectory and prowess, which contributed to the success of their collaboration. The spontaneity of the offer surprised Pattinson, and their readiness on-set laid the groundwork for a leap of faith involving the role of Jackson, which is a bold, unsettling, and difficult part to play. Both Lawerence and Pattinson added profundity to their characters, otherwise too deep into their own abyss in the book.

What makes Die My Love worth watching is not only its phenomenal star cast of Hollywood veterans but also a thoughtful ending that gives both Grace and Jackson more cinematic dimensions.

How Robert Pattinson's Die My Love is different from the book

Based on Ariana Harwicz's 2012 novel, Die, My Love, Robert Pattinson's latest of his long list of new movies, shifts the narrative from rural France to the United States and softens the novel's core extremity of dread. The movie externalizes the book's internal conflicts and stream-of-consciousness trauma of the lead characters with striking visual elements and hard-hitting dialogues. As Jennifer Lawrence's Grace dives into a world of postpartum chaos, her husband becomes increasingly useless.

Talking about the more structured ending, Pattinson said in the same interview that from Jackson's perspective, "in being doomed, they are connected to each other eternally, in trauma." He also added that his character was not around much in the first draft of the script, much like in the book; however, the final version ended up revealing a complex love story instead of an ode to motherhood and rage, rife with nuances of mental health issues and helplessness of someone who does not have the tools to fix them. Safe to say, Lawrence's laid-back offer to Pattinson ultimately paid off, as it gave two perspectives on the same existential narrative.
