Seoul turned the Han River into a Marvel spectacle on October 31, with 2,000 drones bringing the franchise’s heroes to life. For Robert Downey Jr., the celebration carried an especially interesting twist: the very force of life behind Iron Man is returning as its new antagonist, Doctor Doom. Tony Stark’s sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame appeared to close that chapter, but Marvel has found a rather spectacular way to reopen the conversation, and Seoul gave fans a luminous preview.
The Halloween celebration had been announced days earlier, but the actual spectacle brought a considerably bigger Marvel presence to the riverfront.
Seoul’s Han River welcomes Marvel and Dr. Doom with 2,000 drones
The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced its Marvel-themed performance as the final instalment of the 2026 Hangang Drone Light Show, scheduled for Ttukseom Hangang Park on Halloween. Titled Marvel Special, the free event was designed around a record 2,000 drones recreating recognizable characters and cinematic moments, with music accompanying the formations.
Visitors could also explore an Avengers: Doomsday-themed photo zone, a costume parade, and event booths before the evening performance, turning the riverside into a celebration. Iron Man was among the featured characters, giving the display an unmistakable connection to Downey’s MCU legacy. The display hung in there for several seconds before flickering out as the drones rearranged themselves to then light up as Doom.

The main show, of which the Iron Man to Dr. Doom (via DiscussingFilm) shift was part, took place between 8:30 and 8:45 p.m. Seoul has actually already brought another major film property to the river. Back in May, another 2,000-drone Star Wars performance recreated spacecraft, characters, and lightsaber confrontations above Jamsil Hangang Park.
The spectacle arrives as Marvel prepares to make Downey’s return one of its biggest cinematic gambles, exchanging the familiar armour of a hero for the imposing mask of a villain.
What Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom could mean for the MCU
Marvel revealed Robert Downey Jr.’s casting at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024, confirming that he would play Victor von Doom rather than reprise Tony Stark. The announcement reunited him with directors Anthony and Joe Russo, who previously worked with the actor on several MCU blockbusters, including Avengers: Endgame.
Doom is no straightforward replacement for the franchise’s former central hero: the character is a formidable scientist, sorcerer, and ruler of Latveria, whose ambitions extend far beyond defeating individual superheroes.

Regardless, it will all make sense when Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theatres on December 18, 2026. Marvel has kept much of Doom’s story under wraps, but the character’s comic-book history offers plenty of room for an antagonist driven by intellect, power, and an absolute belief in his own authority. Downey’s return inevitably invites comparisons with Stark, yet the challenge is to make Doom feel like an entirely different force, not Iron Man wearing a darker costume.
