Robert Downey Jr. is back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, because apparently even death cannot keep Tony Stark away from a good multiverse crisis. Fans are already debating whether Doctor Doom is an evil Stark variant, stole Stark's face to manipulate the Avengers, or plans to save the multiverse before conquering it. Some theories even suggest Steve Rogers accidentally helped set Doom's rise in motion.

With the Avengers: Doomsday trailer putting multiple superheroes on stage and bringing the Thunderbolts face-to-face with the X-Men, one critical change to Doctor Doom's costume suggests that his new look means more than meets the eye, or, in this case, the face.

Robert Downey Jr. may be playing Doctor Doom, but Avengers: Doomsday appears to have given fans a mystery worthy of an Avengers-level investigation: why does Victor von Doom seem to have two different masks? The Fantastic Four: First Steps post-credits scene reveals a classic metallic faceplate, while the Avengers: Doomsday trailer shows a far more rugged, mechanical design. For a villain already surrounded by multiversal questions, the mask mismatch feels suspiciously intentional.

The first mask, seen in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, looks like it walked straight out of a 1960s Stan Lee and Jack Kirby comic book and into Earth-828. Its smooth, riveted metal design feels traditional, personal, and perfectly suited to a monarch and sorcerer concealing a severely scarred face. The second mask,  as seen in the Avengers: Doomsday trailer, however, is sharper, heavier, and far more battle-ready, as if Doctor Doom upgraded his wardrobe after deciding that one universe was not enough trouble.

That difference has sparked theories that the two masks could reflect different stages of Doctor Doom's multiversal campaign, with the Avengers: Doomsday version built for a far more dangerous war. Fans have also speculated about possible changes to the voice modulation, though Marvel has confirmed nothing of the sort. Still, when Robert Downey Jr. is behind the metal, even a wardrobe change can look like a plot twist waiting for its third act.

Will 'Avengers: Doomsday' Bring Back the Illuminati? Everything We Know So Far

While the two masks could simply mean Doctor Doom upgraded his look between The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Avengers: Doomsday, the mismatch has everyone wondering whether the difference is hiding something more sinister.

What could Dr. Doom's two masks mean

Robert Downey Jr. is playing Doctor Doom, so naturally, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has given fans two masks and expected nobody to start a conspiracy board. The silver faceplate from The Fantastic Four: First Steps and the heavier armor-like mask from Avengers: Doomsday could simply reflect different occasions, with one suited for royal appearances and the other for surviving the sort of battle that makes the Avengers reconsider their career choices. The two masks have everyone talking just as they did when the Latverian witches appeared.

Perhaps the first mask belongs to the polished monarch, while the second is built for a man crossing collapsing timelines and collecting whatever advanced technology the multiverse is foolish enough to leave lying around. Fans have also wondered whether the heavier mask could make Doctor Doom's voice more mechanical and unrecognizable, turning his identity into a weapon against the Avengers. Which brings us back to the suspiciously important difference between Doctor Doom's two masks, because the Avengers: Doomsday trailer may have quietly changed the one thing about Robert Downey Jr. that fans were expecting to see.
