In Variety's recent Actors on Actors with Elisabeth Moss, Riz Ahmed recalled how Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle advised him to relax during his performance after he first presented a restrained performance. The actor followed his instructions word-for-word, which led to him returning for a second performance that exceeded all anticipated boundaries.

"[Danny Boyle] was trying to get me to be more loose and riled up. He goes, 'Listen, he’s in an aggressive mood. You can do whatever you want because the cameraman is going to move around with you," the Sound of Metal actor shared during Variety's interview show.

Ahmed, who recently mesmerized in Prime Video's Bait, remembered trying for the role of Salim Malik, the brother of Dev Patel's character, Jamal Malik, who was aggressive in nature. In taking Boyle's suggestion too seriously, Ahmed remembered almost manhandling his scene partner as the button popped off and admitted that he went beyond his limits. When Boyle thanked him for coming, he knew it did not go well. However, Ahmed said that not choosing him for the "right decision."

Thereby, he lost his chance at being part of the film that went on to achieve major international success after Dev Patel received the lead role, which brought in multiple Academy Awards. Ahmed, who now views his past experience through a lens of humor, went on to bag his own Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film in 2022 for The Long Goodbye. Meanwhile, Slumdog Millionaire continues to stand steadfast in its position in transcultural cinematic discourse, with viewers and critics still revisiting the movie almost two decades after its release.
