Richard Linklater is giving Gen Z an unexpected standing ovation for keeping movie theaters thriving. The generation once expected to abandon cinemas for streaming has become the box office's biggest ally, accounting for 39% of North American ticket sales. From Barbenheimer to IMAX screenings, Gen Z has made the communal moviegoing experience fashionable again.
The Before Sunset filmmaker believes Gen Z may have rescued the theatrical film experience from an 80-year-old threat.

Hollywood once looked at Gen Z, glanced at TikTok, and quietly prepared the obituary for movie theaters. Richard Linklater has a different ending in mind. Speaking to Variety, the Before Sunset director argued that the generation raised on algorithms has unexpectedly become the audience keeping the big screen alive.
“The theatrical film experience has been under threat for 80 years, and it always withstands the ups and downs because we are communal beings,” Linklater said. That sentiment feels less nostalgic than prophetic. Gen Z has reclaimed cinemas as a shared destination, where collective reactions matter as much as whatever is playing on the screen.

What Richard Linklater confined to Variety can be backed up by Gen Z behaviour from this year alone. The revival has arrived with unexpected company. Young audiences have championed original projects like Curry Barker's Obsession and Kane Parsons's Backrooms, while also packing IMAX screenings and repertory showings. Add Letterboxd's influence to the mix, and the generation once blamed for cinema's decline has become its loudest advocate instead.
Richard Linklater, much like Nicolas Cage, might be onto something with cinema's newly redeemed audience.
What is Richard Linklater preparing?
Richard Linklater clearly is not slowing down after championing the theatrical experience. The filmmaker is patiently crafting Merrily We Roll Along, filming the Stephen Sondheim adaptation over two decades so its cast ages naturally alongside the story. At the same time, Richard Linklater is assembling a nineteenth-century drama starring Ethan Hawke, Natalie Portman, and Oscar Isaac that explores the rise of Transcendentalism.

For a director who believes the magic of theaters lies in patience and shared experiences, the lineup feels fitting. None of these projects is chasing instant gratification. Instead, Richard Linklater is investing in stories built to linger, giving the very audience he credits for cinema's revival even more reasons to keep showing up.
