Success may have changed Richard Gadd’s career overnight, but it did not immediately change the way he saw himself. Even after Baby Reindeer became one of Netflix’s biggest breakout hits, the Emmy-winning creator still found it difficult to believe Hollywood’s biggest names might actually want to work with him. That self-doubt led to one memorable surprise when he reached out to Jamie Bell with the script for Half Man.

As it turns out, Gadd expected silence. Instead, he found one of the project’s biggest champions.

Speaking on Dinner’s On Me with Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Gadd admitted he never expected Jamie Bell to respond after receiving the first episode of Half Man. Although Baby Reindeer had already become a global phenomenon, Gadd said it still hadn’t fully registered that established actors might now be interested in collaborating with him. Believing the script would likely disappear into the void, he was caught off guard when Bell not only replied but also expressed genuine enthusiasm for the project.

"It was a real honor to work with him. It was it was tough shoot. It was intense sort of like, trust that has to happen there. I mean I I feel like I read somewhere that he convinced you to to doing the part like he wanted to do it with you." Gadd told Jesse Tyler Ferguson.

That initial response eventually led Gadd to fly to Los Angeles to meet Bell in person, describing the experience as surreal because he had admired the actor since childhood. Gadd praised Bell as someone who remains remarkably understated despite decades in the spotlight, calling him an underrated performer whose quiet presence has always stood out. Looking back, he described working alongside Bell on Half Man as a genuine honor, adding that the emotionally demanding series required a deep level of trust between them throughout filming.

That leap of faith paid off in spectacular fashion. What began as a script Gadd feared would go unread has since become one of television’s biggest success stories of the year.

Half Man became Richard Gadd’s biggest success after Baby Reindeer

Premiering as Richard Gadd’s long-awaited follow-up to Baby Reindeer, Half Man quickly established itself as another critical triumph. The six-part HBO and BBC drama climbed to No. 5 globally on HBO Max following its release and earned widespread praise for its emotionally charged exploration of family trauma, toxic masculinity, and fractured relationships. The series has also emerged as a major contender during the 2026 awards season, securing an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor.

Set across multiple decades, Half Man follows estranged half-brothers Ruben and Niall, played by Richard Gadd and Jamie Bell, as their shared past gradually unravels through a nonlinear narrative spanning nearly 40 years. The ensemble also features Stuart Campbell, Mitchell Robertson, Neve McIntosh, Marianne McIvor, Bilal Hasna, Amy Manson, and Tim Downie. Despite its overwhelming success and growing calls for another season, Gadd has maintained that Half Man was always conceived as a complete, self-contained story, choosing to preserve its original vision rather than extend it beyond its intended ending.

Richard Gadd may have doubted whether Jamie Bell would even open his script, but Half Man has since become another defining chapter in his remarkable career.
