Sony has announced that the next Resident Evil reboot will arrive in theaters and IMAX on September 18, 2026. Directed by Zach Cregger, the film is a new cinematic reboot of Capcom’s legendary survival-horror franchise and is being distributed by Columbia Pictures. The film is reportedly a new, original story, but one that still captures the tense, horror-driven feel that made the games a worldwide phenomenon.

The upcoming Resident Evil reboot will be the second movie reboot of the long-running franchise based on Capcom’s survival-horror video games. Zach Cregger co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten. Austin Abrams stars as Bryan, alongside Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Johnno Wilson and Paul Walter Hauser. Set during the events of 1998's Resident Evil 2 video game, the movie promises a darker, horror-driven take that is more in line with the source material.

The official synopsis explains that Bryan is a medical courier whose routine delivery becomes a nightmare when a viral outbreak occurs in Raccoon City. Infections run wild throughout the city, and he has to fight for his life because of the terror caused by the lethal virus. The reboot is planned to return to the original universe from Resident Evil 2 because it was what turned those video games into an international success due to all its fear, suspense, and horror.

While the reboot introduces a fresh story, it remains rooted in the survival horror universe that has captivated fans across video games and films for nearly three decades.

What is the Resident Evil franchise about?

The plot of the original Resident Evil is based on the survivors trying to cope with the catastrophic outbreaks of viruses unleashed by the evil corporation called Umbrella, which is a pharmaceutical company conducting illegal bio-engineering experiments. This movie series covers corporate corruption, fatal bio-weaponry, and mankind struggling against zombie-like monsters and mutants. In the original film from 2002, amnesic security officer Alice and the special military unit raid the Hive, where the fatal T-virus epidemic makes the researchers into zombies and creates a worldwide disaster.
