Zach Cregger took the reins to reimagine the horror of the famous video game franchise in his film, Resident Evil reboot. But rather than following the previous films in the franchise, the Weapons director took a very different approach and inspiration. And as a gaming enthusiast himself, he had promised to stay true to the game and its essence.

However, as the first glimpse of the movie reveals several changes from the source material, the director opened up about the reason behind his vision as well as the inspiration for it.

In an interview with Sony, Zach Cregger revealed that, as a gaming fanatic himself, he wanted the Resident Evil film to focus on horror, which is the true essence of the game, rather than action. For this, he drew inspiration from his own experiences playing the game and making mistakes. He wants the audience to see the story through the eyes of a player, especially someone untrained with weapons, like himself.

The director further explained that while playing the games, he struggled with aiming and often missed shots because he is not skilled with g***. This inspired him to make the protagonist an ordinary person who is suddenly thrown into a dangerous situation without any special training or experience. This explains why the movie does not feature skilled characters from the game, which has previously bothered fans.

"So I had this idea, for a story in the world of Resident Evil, but It's kind of like me. Like if I was dropped into a Resident Evil game, I'm terrible with g***. I wouldn't know how any of them work. I would miss 99% of all of my shots," he said.

So Leon S. Kennedy, who features in the game, does not appear in the film. This is due to the same reason, as Cregger wanted the movie to focus on horror rather than action and show a fresh take on the game. Not only the characters, but the director has also introduced several different creatures, as seen in the trailer.

Zack Cregger reveals inspiration behind the hairless creature in Resident Evil

The first trailer for Resident Evil shows a huge, terrifying, potbellied, hairless creature. It is a hybrid monster to show the effects of the outbreak’s mutations. In conversation with IGN, Zach Cregger explained that he wanted to explore the effects of the T-Virus. As for inspiration, Cregger revealed that he looked to the character of The Judge from the novel Blood Meridian.

He was fascinated by the tall, pale, seven-foot figure, and that idea inspired a version of it to be included in the movie. This is just one of the many horrors in Cregger’s Resident Evil, which follows a medical courier, Bryan, who must fight to survive the unexpected outbreak. The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on September 18, 2026.
