The first look at M. Night Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks’ Remain, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor, has been released. When it was first announced in January 2025 that Shyamalan and Sparks were coming together for a project, it was like two different universes setting their path to collide. Nobody knew at that point in time what this unlikely collaboration would result in, as they are both masters of their genre, but blending those two categories together is a gamble very few dare to attempt.  

However, we have now got the very first glimpse of the gamble, and from whatever little can be seen, it looks promising.

Warner Bros. unveiled the first glimpse of M. Night Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks' latest spooky romance thriller, Remain, on Tuesday. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Tate Gordon, a reclusive architect from New York who relocates to a tiny seaside hamlet to finish his most recent project. He emerges from his shell after meeting Phoebe Dynevor's Wren, an attractive young woman, only to discover that things are not what they seem.

While the trailer takes off as a romantic comedy, which of course seems to be the creation of Sparks, the Shayamalan element soon kicks in, and the romance takes on the cover of a thriller, and then suddenly it slips into horror. One moment in the trailer, Tate and Wren are happy in their cozy little house, having fun and playing games, and the very next minute, Wren seems to be disappearing on Tate, acting strange and spooky.

The first look by Warner Bros. only featured Gyllenhaal and Dynevor and gave an idea about the general dynamic between their characters. However, the film also has a roster of capable supporting cast. These include Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty, Jay O. Sanders, Tracy Ifeachor, Hannah James, Caleb Ruminer, Kieran Mulcare, and Maria Dizzia.

Besides creating this incredibly thrilling romantic flick, Shyamalan and Sparks also produced this movie. 

On Valentine's Day, Remain, which also served as the inspiration for novelist Nicholas Sparks' book of the same name, opens in theaters. Through Blinding Edge Pictures, M. Night Shyamalan collaborates with Ashwin Rajan, Marc Bienstock, and Theresa Park, Sparks' producing partner. Sparks also joins this lineup as executive producer. Therefore, it seems that Shyamalan and Sparks have gone all in with the project.

Before deciding on its Valentine's Day premiere, the movie was originally scheduled for release on Halloween in 2026. Shyamalan disclosed earlier this year that Remain was the most taxing movie of his career. The director has given us some masterpieces like The Sixth Sense and Split, but this movie was still the most demanding for him. This says a lot about the movie, and the first look definitely provides some credibility to this statement.
