Season 26 of Law & Order saw a heartbreaking exit for beloved senior detective Vincent Riley. Earlier reports revealed that Reid Scott, who portrays Riley in the long-running NBC crime drama, was preparing to bid farewell to the series. The shocking news, however, came with a promise that Riley’s story would receive a proper send-off.

Now, months later, the series bids an emotional goodbye to the character. And fans are unlikely to forget the scene anytime soon.

Vincent Riley goes out like a hero

Vincent Riley’s exit was shown in the second episode of Season 26, titled “Into the Mystic.” The episode showed Riley leaving a voicemail for ADA Nolan Price and calling Walker for backup. Meanwhile, the detective headed out to look for a potential suspect, Ray Biller, who was expected to be at a bar.

When Riley confronted Biller, he asked the man to talk to him. But as Biller tried to flee, he shot Riley in the chest and walked away. Later, Walker found the detective bleeding on the street.

Although he rushed Riley to the hospital, the detective eventually died. This led the show to launch an investigation into who k***** him. Detective Violet Yee eventually discovered that Riley had been looking for Biller.

It was later revealed that ADA Price had sent Ray’s brother, Wayne Biller, to jail years before Riley’s m*****. And Wayne had been k***** in prison just one week before Riley’s death. This reveals that Biller was looking for Price when Riley got in the way. The case was eventually solved, and Biller was convicted of Riley’s m*****. In the end, Riley’s name appeared on the NYPD Wall of Honor as a final tribute to the detective.

As for Reid Scott, his decision to leave the show was reportedly mutual.
