Rei Ami may have just won over The Devil Wears Prada fandom with her bold take on Andy’s boyfriend, Nate, declaring him a villain. The character has faced considerable backlash for not being supportive of his girlfriend, Andy. And Nate has recently come back into conversation after reports suggested his character would be absent from The Devil Wears Prada sequel.

While some fans are curious to see how his storyline would have turned out in the film, others are relieved that the character is not part of the sequel. And the South Korean singer and rapper clearly belongs to the latter, as she shared her bold opinion on the character.

Rei Ami, who recently attended the world premiere of The Devil Wears Prada 2 in New York City, spoke to Variety and admitted that she is a fan of the original film. During the conversation, she was asked about the long-running debate over whether Nate is misunderstood or simply evil. Without hesitation, she called the character a villain.

“I think he lowkey was a hater and wanted to be Andrea, and yeah, I think he was a villain,” she said.

When asked if Nate deserved a spin-off or a role in the sequel, she quickly disagreed. Rei Ami further added that the movie is not about Nate, but about Andrea, so he absolutely does not need a sequel. However, Anne Hathaway might disagree with her. During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, she explained that the characters, Nate and Andy, were both very young and still figuring things out, so she does not see Nate as a villain.

"I wouldn't want to be defined by my worst moment in my 20s, certainly, so I don't hold Nate as a villain, actually," she said.

Moreover, Adrian Grenier, who plays Nate in The Devil Wears Prada, might also disagree, as he has openly expressed interest in a spin-off to explore his character further. While Grenier did not directly defend Nate, he said he was curious to see what happens to the character apart from the original story in an interview with People. Although the sequel could have been an opportunity to explore that, it ultimately did not.

After much silence, the director has also recently opened up about his decision to exclude Nate from the sequel.

Was Nate supposed to be in The Devil Wears Prada 2?

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, The Devil Wears Prada director David Frankel mentioned Nate and revealed that he had initially considered a cameo for actor Adrian Grenier in the film. This suggests there was indeed some intention to show what happened to the character later on. However, it was too late in the production process to include the cameo.

Even Grenier himself has expressed disappointment about not being included in the film in an interview with People. Since it would have been a brief appearance, Andy and Nate are certainly not together again. But atl east a cameo would have offered a glimpse of how his character may have grown.
