Some Broadway stories never fade, no matter how many decades pass. At the 2026 Tony Awards, one of theatre’s brightest modern stars helped celebrate one of its most enduring classics as Rachel Zegler took the stage to honour 'A Chorus Line's landmark 50th anniversary. And judging by the response inside Radio City Music Hall, the beloved musical’s legacy remains as powerful as ever.

Recently, Rachel Zegler took centre stage at the 79th Tony Awards to honour the 50th anniversary of A Chorus Line. Performing the iconic ballad ‘What I Did for Love’ at Radio City Music Hall, the actress paid tribute to a musical that has remained one of Broadway’s defining productions for half a century. The performance formed part of the ceremony’s celebration of the show’s enduring impact on theatre history and its generations of performers.
Originally opening at the Shubert Theatre in 1975, A Chorus Line chronicled the hopes, fears, and ambitions of dancers competing for a place in a Broadway chorus line. The production ran for an extraordinary 6,137 performances and held the title of Broadway’s longest-running show until Cats surpassed it in 1997. Along the way, it collected multiple Tony Awards, including Best Musical, helping secure its status as one of the most influential productions ever to grace a Broadway stage.
If Sunday’s performance celebrated Broadway history, Rachel Zegler’s next chapter suggests she may soon become part of it herself.
Rachel Zegler’s own Broadway chapter is just beginning
The Tony Awards tribute comes as Rachel Zegler prepares for one of the biggest stages of her career. The actress is set to reprise her acclaimed portrayal of Eva Perón in Jamie Lloyd’s Broadway Transfer of Evita after earning widespread praise and an Olivier Award for the production’s West End run. The transfer is scheduled to begin performances at the Winter Garden Theatre in early 2027, marking Zegler’s long-awaited return to New York’s theatre scene.

Beyond Broadway, the actress continues to assemble an ambitious slate of projects. Zegler is attached to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical film Octet, the father-daughter drama Last Dance opposite Adrien Brody, and the comedy-drama She Gets It from Me alongside Marisa Tomei. She also recently starred in a special concert production of The Last Five Years and will release the Evita cast album later this year.
With major film roles, musical projects, and a Broadway revival all on the horizon, Zegler’s performance at the Tony Awards felt less like a tribute to the past and more like a glimpse of what comes next.
