Curry Barker reveals his burning desire to take on Indiana Jones but with an R-rated twist. Fresh off turning the indie horror landscape upside down with his box-office phenomenon Obsession, filmmaker Curry Barker is ready to swap psychological terror for a much wilder, high-stakes playground. Proving that his creative ambitions stretch far beyond conventional boundaries, the breakout director has set his crosshairs on a legendary archaeological property, revealing a wish-list dream to drag a classic adventure franchise through a gloriously twisted, hard-rated R filter.

The Obsession director would very much like to try his hands on Lucasfilm’s beloved IP, giving it a new R-rated turn.

During a recent sit-down with Gold Derby, filmmaker Curry Barker laid bare an ambitious cinematic pipe dream shared with producing collaborator Cooper Tomlinson: crafting a gritty, adults-only reimagining modeled after Lucasfilm’s iconic archaeological treasure-hunt saga, Indiana Jones.

"I would want to do a really f***** up, rated-R version of [Indiana Jones]. I want to do a crazy adventure movie,” said Barker.

“That's something that Cooper and I have talked about, because we feel like we've never seen something like that; we've only ever seen the family-friendly version,” he added further.

His hypothetical narrative tracks an everyday protagonist whose routine expedition slowly unravels into a chaotic nightmare - a tonal blueprint that mirrors the mounting dread and mordant comedy that turned his psychological thriller Obsession into an instant talking point. The idea seems simple enough but is daring, as it takes on an iconic piece of cinema and reimagines it with a wild twist.

His Gold Derby confession arrives at an intriguing crossroads for Lucasfilm's legendary archaeological property. Following James Mangold's Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which marked Harrison Ford's final bow as the iconic hero but suffered a brutal box office underperformance, the storied franchise has been kept largely mothballed.

The radio silence on the franchise was recently shattered by a San Diego Comic-Con announcement that gave the iconic IP a new life.

India Jones gets a new comic book run

San Diego Comic-Con recently removed the covers from the franchise by unveiling a brand-new five-issue comic book run titled Indiana Jones and the Sword of Pandemonium. The series is slated for a December rollout chronicling exploits immediately following Raiders of the Lost Ark, though stopping short of a live-action revival. However, as far as Curry Barker is concerned, he has plenty of other cinematic irons in the fire.

His immediate future is dominated by the May 7, 2027 theatrical arrival of Anything But Ghosts, a Focus Features and Blumhouse Atomic Monster horror-comedy collaboration that stars Barker and Cooper Tomlinson as incompetent paranormal investigators who quickly bite off more than they can chew. Set within the exact same shared continuity as Obsession, the upcoming feature boasts an enviable ensemble featuring Violet McGraw, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Aaron Paul.
