A former Top of the Pops producer has finally opened up about the biggest divas he encountered during his career, and his memories go beyond ordinary backstage chatter. Gareth Davies spent years working behind the scenes with major music names, watching fame unfold from the wings rather than the spotlight. What he recalls paints a picture worth revisiting, starting with one unforgettable ritual.

While some performers relied on quiet routines, one star needed an entire team just to keep moving.

Shania Twain tops the diva list from a former Top of the Pops producer

Gareth Davies, a former producer on Top of the Pops, named Shania Twain as the biggest diva of his career, recalling a ritual her crew followed just to keep her moving. Twain reportedly never touched a door herself, forcing her entourage into a rehearsed relay of opening every door ahead of her arrival, though Davies noted that Jennifer Lopez and Madonna brought their own versions of star behavior to the same show.

"It was quite fascinating to see … It was sort of like this regimented, rehearsed line that if someone faltered," he told Page Six.

He then added, "if someone didn't get to the door before Shania did, they might be in trouble," a routine he called a little bit "over k***."

Davies also told Page Six that Lopez turned her dressing room into an entirely white space, complete with plastic film covering the walls. He noted that Lopez insisted on a white microphone as well, a detail that took real effort to arrange. According to Davies, Madonna arrived with the largest entourage he had ever seen, and her stylist once forgot to bring her outfits entirely, leaving the team scrambling before showtime.

Yet performers are not the only ones capable of overstepping lines, since fans have proven just as demanding in return.

Celebrities have their own boundaries with fans too

Fans have proven they can be just as demanding as any star, often blurring the line between admiration and intrusion. Bad Bunny once threw a phone into the water after a fan pushed it into his face, explaining that respect mattered more than a photo. Justin Bieber has said no one is owed a picture just for buying an album, and he has asked fans camped outside his home to leave him in peace.

Other celebrities have shared similar accounts, from Emma Watson avoiding selfies over safety to Lili Reinhart confronting fans who photographed her during lunch. Chappell Roan and Sophia Bush have both spoken about uncomfortable physical contact from strangers. Between demanding stars and equally demanding fans, backstage life and public life both come with lines nobody should cross.
