Quentin Tarantino has painted Hollywood with a brutal metaphor, describing today's film industry as a "flavorless sausage factory" churning out bland, mass-produced content rather than the artful cinema we once cherished. Since the pandemic, blockbuster hits have overwhelmingly leaned on sequels, reboots, and safe IP knockoffs, leaving little room for original storytelling.

The director's own last film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, arrived just before the pandemic in 2019, while his ambitious next project featuring Brad Pitt as a 1960s-70s magazine writer was ultimately shelved. This creative slowdown has left even cinema’s most passionate voices searching for inspiration in an era driven by nostalgia over innovation.

It is against this backdrop that the filmmaker has delivered one of his most candid critiques yet.

Quentin Tarantino bashed Hollywood's production trends

Quentin Tarantino is well known to not mince his words, especially when it comes to delivering criticism. Following massive backlash for his Paul Dano comment, Tarantino has now taken to Hollywood as a whole. Known for delivering some of the biggest hits, the director has listed down exactly what he feels is wrong with Hollywood today.

"Flaws, implausibilities, audience pandering, miscast performers, or just plain stupid s***." The Pulp Fiction auteur revealed in an interview with Sight & Sound.

Tarantino went further, comparing today's output unfavorably to the 1980s, which he previously considered Hollywood's worst era, stating.

"By comparison, the movies of the last six years make the '80s seem like the '30s." He also admitted he finds it almost impossible to enjoy new films without nitpicking, confessing he would rather read a book than watch movies, highlighting how barren the current cinematic landscape has become for someone who once lived for the magic of cinema.

However, the director made a rare exception for Joe Carnahan's Netflix crime thriller The Rip, starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, which he praised as an exciting cop thriller with a novel premise that manages to deliver the goods in really clever ways. Tarantino singled out the screenplay as the film's greatest strength.

That unexpected praise also connects to another major development tied to Tarantino’s creative future.

Tarantino hands over the next chapter while expanding his Hollywood Universe

In a surprising move, Quentin Tarantino will not direct his next project, instead passing the responsibility to David Fincher. The film The Adventures of Cliff Booth serves as a continuation of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and is one of the most ambitious scripts Tarantino has written. Set in 1977, it revisits Cliff Booth, with Brad Pitt returning to portray the character in a darker phase of his life.

The story shifts Booth into a new role as a Hollywood fixer, navigating the industry’s hidden secrets and moral gray areas. This premise allows the film to explore a different side of the entertainment world, moving beyond nostalgia into a more complex and shadowy narrative. Fincher’s involvement signals a tonal shift, blending his signature style with Tarantino’s writing.

Netflix has confirmed a global rollout strategy that includes an exclusive IMAX theatrical window beginning November 25, 2026, followed by a streaming release on December 23, 2026. With a reported $200 million scale, the project stands as Tarantino’s most expensive screenplay to date. It also marks a unique moment in his career as he steps back from directing while still shaping the story as writer and producer.
