Playing Elphaba and Glinda in Wicked and Wicked: For Good brought Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande together for an extended promotional campaign, where their emotional connection became almost as talked about as the films themselves.
Erivo pushed back against that reaction during her Guardian interview, arguing that some people seemed strangely bothered by the idea that two women could share such an openly affectionate friendship.
“It was interesting that there were many people who had become psychologists from their couches,” she said.

The scrutiny, Erivo explained, created a no-win situation for the pair.
“It’s a double-edged sword,” she said.
She even wished there were someone who could prescribe “the proper balance of emotion” they should display. Her remarks reflect a broader frustration with the way a promotional campaign can turn ordinary human gestures into a public spectacle.
Yet the attention surrounding Wicked was not the only experience that made Erivo reflect on how the public interprets human behavior. Her next film places her on the other side of a courtroom, confronting a system she believes needs a clearer understanding of consent.

In Prima Facie, Cynthio Erivo plays Tessa, a successful barrister who regularly defends men accused of s***** violence before becoming a victim herself. The courtroom drama, adapted from Suzie Miller’s acclaimed play, follows Tessa as her personal experience challenges the legal system she once trusted. Speaking to The Guardian about the film, Erivo argued that consent should never be treated as an ambiguous concept.
“If a person isn’t conscious, or conscious enough to say yes, they’re not saying yes,” she explained. “If a person doesn’t say yes, they don’t say yes. If the body language doesn’t say yes, they don’t say yes, ” she said.
