The producers behind American Sniper are set to adapt the life story of Richard Goodall, the Indiana school janitor who won America's Got Talent Season 19 and its $1 million grand prize. Goodall worked as a janitor for more than two decades before his AGT audition drew national attention to his singing.

For a man whose life changed with a single song, the next chapter may be his biggest one yet.

According to Deadline, Goodall has signed a deal with Everard Entertainment and Mad Chance to develop a feature film based on his life. The project will chronicle the singer’s unlikely rise from a middle-school janitor in Terre Haute, Indiana, to the winner of one of television’s biggest talent competitions. Producers Ben Everard and Andrew Lazar described the story as an inspiring reminder that dreams can come true regardless of age or circumstance

“Like the millions worldwide, I was captivated the moment he stepped foot on that audition stage. Bringing his journey to the silver screen is an honor we take seriously.” Everard told Deadline.

Further fueling the excitement, producer Andrew Lazar told Deadline that Goodall’s rise embodies the kind of underdog story rarely seen in modern entertainment, adding that he has little doubt the film will resonate with audiences around the world. However, long before the standing ovations and national recognition, Goodall spent 23 years working as a school janitor while quietly pursuing his passion for music away from the spotlight.

His fortunes changed overnight after a viral video of him performing 'Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’ caught the attention of America’s Got Talent judge Howie Mandel, ultimately leading to an audition that left both the judges and viewers in awe.

Interestingly, Goodall is not the first talent-show underdog whose journey has proven worthy of a Hollywood adaptation.

Richard Goodall joins a growing list of talent-show success stories

The upcoming film follows a path previously taken by Britain’s Got Talent sensation Paul Potts, whose rise from bullied shop assistant to internationally recognized opera singer inspired the 2013 biopic One Chance. Starring James Corden, the film demonstrated how powerful underdog stories from television competitions can resonate with audiences far beyond the stage itself. Richard Goodall’s journey shares many of those same elements, including perseverance, late-life success, and an unwavering belief in following a dream.

The screenplay will be written by Chris Parizo, while production duties will be handled by Everard Entertainment and Mad Chance, companies with experience developing both commercial projects and acclaimed biographical dramas. Although casting and release details remain under wraps, the announcement signals yet another milestone in a journey that has already exceeded even the most optimistic expectations.

Thus, with Hollywood now embracing the very story that captivated millions on America’s Got Talent, Richard Goodall’s extraordinary journey appears to be entering its most cinematic chapter yet.
