Prince William and Kate Middleton last shared a red carpet with Tom Cruise in May 2022 at the U.K. premiere of Top Gun: Maverick, where the actor hosted the royal couple for a private screening before the official event. Prince William and Princess Kate arrived at the ODEON Luxe Leicester Square on Tuesday, September 22, for the 73rd Royal Film Performance supporting the Film and TV Charity. Tom Cruise greeted the couple on the red carpet, where he even complimented William's striking velvet jacket. 

The evening brought together the royal couple, Cruise, director Alejandro González Iñárritu, and members of the film's ensemble. Digger stars Cruise as oil tycoon Digger Rockwell, whose drilling operations trigger an ecological disaster and send him on an unusual mission to repair the damage.

Cruise's connection with the British royal family stretches back decades, including encounters with Princess Diana and Prince Philip. His friendship with William and Kate has remained particularly visible through their shared interest in aviation and cinema.

And while Digger brought Cruise together with British royalty, another long-awaited project is putting him back behind the wheel.

Tom Cruise is officially returning as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle in a sequel to 1990's Days of Thunder. The project was announced at Daytona International Speedway alongside co-star Anne Hathaway, who will play a team owner and engineer. The announcement revealed a planned summer 2028 release.

The Days of Thunder sequel brings together Cruise with director Joseph Kosinski, who previously collaborated successfully on Top Gun: Maverick, ensuring a similar commitment to practical racing cinematography and authentic on-track action sequences.

Jerry Bruckheimer produces both Days of Thunder 2 and the recent F1 film, creating potential crossover opportunities between the racing franchises. The producer teased that Sonny Hayes from F1 and Cole Trickle might share screen time, suggesting a shared racing universe that connects both properties through Bruckheimer's production company.
