In October 2022, Prince Harry, Sir Elton John, Elizabeth Hurley, and other prominent names launched a privacy fight against Associated Newspapers Limited, alleging unlawful information gathering. The accusations were hardly small potatoes: phone tapping, homes allegedly being bugged, and private investigators reportedly hired to uncover private information. Now, the star-studded case has ended in defeat, alongside an initial $13 million payment.

The privacy case has now moved from courtroom defeat to a very real financial deadline. In a Friday judgment, Justice Matthew Nicklin ordered Prince Harry and six other claimants to make an initial $13 million (approx) payment to the Daily Mail publisher by August 28. The ruling gives the losing group just seven days to settle the amount.

The publisher is seeking a substantially larger sum, with the total costs claim reaching nearly $47 million. However, Justice Matthew Nicklin has not yet decided whether the claimants must cover the entire figure, describing the requested amount as “excessive.” He also refused to impose a cap, warning that doing so could create unfairness between the parties.

The ruling follows the complete dismissal of the group’s claims last month after Justice Matthew Nicklin found that they had failed to prove their allegations. His lengthy judgement also criticized how the case developed, noting that it moved beyond the original accusations toward wider challenges involving Associated Newspapers’ inquiries, disclosure, and response to the Leveson Inquiry.

The Duke of Sussex, who is moving back to the UK, Elton John and Elizabeth Hurley will now shoulder the hefty legal expenses and other prominent figures.

Beyond Prince Harry, Elton John, and Elizabeth Hurley, four other prominent figures also joined the privacy lawsuit against Associated Newspapers Limited. David Furnish, a filmmaker and producer, was among the claimants, as was Sadie Frost, the actress and fashion designer. Baroness Doreen Lawrence and former Liberal Democrat minister Sir Simon Hughes completed the group.

Their backgrounds made the group notably varied, stretching from entertainment and fashion to public life and political service. Baroness Doreen Lawrence became widely known through her campaign for justice following the racist murder of her son, Stephen Lawrence, while Sir Simon Hughes brought a political career to the case. Together, the claimants now share its costly outcome.
