The Sussexes’ return to Britain has been building quietly for weeks, with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reportedly preparing for a new chapter closer to the royal family and their children settling into life in the UK. After six years in California, the move has inevitably revived questions about what their return would actually look like. But while the couple may be back on British soil, the Palace has now made one thing unmistakably clear: this is not a return to royal duty. 

For a family whose every British appearance once came with ceremonial choreography, the question was never simply where Harry and Meghan would live, but what kind of welcome would await them.

The Telegraph reported that King Charles has formally clarified how Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are to be treated as “private citizens” following their return. A letter issued by Lord Chamberlain Lord Benyon and circulated to Prince Harry’s team, senior government officials and military stakeholders makes clear that their relocation does not change the terms established when they stepped back from royal duties in 2020. 

"It follows that there is no change to the current status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex...their styles as His and Her Royal Highness remain in abeyance and are not used…In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests," the letter said. 

The distinction is particularly significant because they have returned at a moment when speculation about their public role has been swirling again. Their financial independence and privacy will continue to be respected. The Telegraph also reported that the guidance effectively closes the door on any suggestion that their return could create a new version of the old “half-in, half-out” arrangement.

Yet away from palace protocol, another piece of the Sussexes’ British comeback is beginning to take shape in the countryside.

The Guardian reported that Meghan Markle was reportedly spotted at Soho Farmhouse in north Oxfordshire, adding fresh fuel to speculation that the Sussexes could be establishing themselves in the Cotswolds. The exclusive retreat has long been part of Markle’s British social orbit, and the setting is hardly unfamiliar territory for the Duchess. She reportedly visited the area before marrying Prince Harry and hosted her 2018 hen party at the retreat, while Prince Harry later wrote in Spare about the couple’s affection for Oxfordshire. 

The location would also put the Sussexes within an unusually starry countryside circle, with David and Victoria Beckham, Paul McCartney and other high-profile names associated with the wider Cotswolds scene. The Guardian noted that Prince Harry and Markle previously rented a home in Great Tew and that their children, Archie and Lilibet, have been enrolled at a UK school for the new term. 

For them, then, the British return appears like an attempt to build a private life on familiar ground. The Palace has drawn the boundaries, while the Cotswolds may provide the setting for whatever comes next.
