Prime Video Pulled the Plug on This Eric Dane and Jensen Ackles’ Crime Thriller Way Too Soon

Streaming platforms follow a tough survival protocol; if a show does not hit the numbers they want, it quietly disappears from the catalog. Yet, now and then, a few series come along that create buzz, reel in loyal fans, and leave viewers hanging on a cliffhanger worth talking about. However, sometimes, even such shows slip under the carpet before they can become viral. And one of the most unfortunate casualties of this system was Amazon’s own crime thriller.
Starring Supernatural’s Jensen Ackles and the late Grey’s Anatomy's Eric Dane, whose passing has made this loss feel even heavier, this Amazon Prime thriller arrived in 2025 with all the makings of a breakout hit. But despite the pedigree and promise, the show was pulled from the platform far too soon, leaving fans with more questions than closure.

The show in question is none other than Prime Video's Countdown. Created by Derek Haas, stayed more than a month after its release in the Top 10 for Prime Video's US and got the 8th spot on Nielsen Top 10 for Streaming Originals. And yet, it was called off due to low global viewership, as Deadline reported in 2025. Apart from Countdown, another original called Butterfly was also taken down. The decisions were made under Amazon MGM Studios’ outgoing Head of Global TV, Vernon Sanders.
Owing to the cancellation, Ackles and Haas both reacted to the news in their own different ways. While Ackles called it a "bummer," Haas thanked Amazon to be able to work on it.
"Hey, thank you to Amazon Prime and a great cast and crew for our season of Countdown! Fun to make all around! (pssst… Oliveras lived)," Haas said on his social media.
Countdown starred Jensen Ackles and Eric Dane, who recently lost his life battling ALS. When a Department of Homeland Security officer is murdered in broad daylight, LAPD detective Mark Meachum joins a covert multi-agency task force to hunt the killer. Their investigation uncovers a far more sinister conspiracy, triggering a race against time to save millions in Los Angeles.
The finale episode left a major character’s fate uncertain and teased broader conspiracies that were clearly intended for exploration in a second season. Fans soon took to social media, stating it was immature to end the season without a resolution.
The fan sentiment was not wrong, as the show ended on a major cliffhanger, which made the demand for a second season valid by all means.
The Countdown cliffhanger that remains unanswered
The Countdown Season 1 finale ended on a tense note that was clearly meant to launch Season 2. In Episode 13, the antagonist, Todd, kidnaps DEA agent Amber Oliveras and forces her to run across an open field while he tracks her with a sniper rifle, leaving her fate unresolved on screen as the episode cuts away just before a shot is fired.
This climactic cliffhanger highlighted the broader conspiracy and danger facing the task force, but with the series cancelled after one season, viewers never got the payoff or closure that the story was building toward. Fans are left wondering what really happened to Oliveras and how the task force would have regrouped next.
