The Emmys are leaving broadcast television behind as Prime Video takes over as the awards show’s new global home from 2027. The six-year pact gives the Television Academy a single streaming partner after years of rotating between ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC. More importantly, it places one of television’s oldest institutions inside the same streaming economy it has spent years honoring.

For a ceremony built around television’s biggest annual gathering, this is more than a change of channel. It is a bet on whether the Emmys can turn streaming reach into cultural momentum.

Prime Video puts a price on the Emmys’ streaming future

Prime Video has officially secured the Emmys in a six-year global deal beginning in 2027, with the streamer reportedly paying around $15 million a year for the rights. The financial terms have not been formally disclosed, but Variety reported that sources familiar with the agreement put the annual license fee at approximately $15 million, which would bring the value of the six-year pact to roughly $90 million. That is a notable increase from the previous “wheel deal,” under which ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC reportedly paid between $8 million and $10 million annually for domestic rights alone.

The difference is important because Prime Video is not simply taking over the US telecast. The new arrangement brings the Emmys’ international and related rights together under one global streaming home, as per Variety. Television Academy chair Cris Abrego described the agreement as a “meaningful investment” and confirmed that it was “definitely an increase” over previous license fees. This happened as Prime Video's own shows have gone on to win Emmys in 2026.

The most striking part is that viewers will not have to pay for the privilege. Beginning with the 2027 ceremony, Prime Video will stream the Emmys live and free in more than 240 countries and territories, without requiring a Prime subscription. That gives Amazon a premium live event with enormous promotional value while allowing the Academy to chase the global audience that broadcast television increasingly struggles to reach.

The bigger question is what happens when the Emmys stop being a one-night broadcast and become a year-round streaming property.

The Emmys are becoming an ecosystem, not just an awards night

Cris Abrego has already floated the idea of building a “road to the Emmys,” with Academy interviews, Hall of Fame programming and Television Academy Honors potentially feeding into the ceremony. That matters commercially because Prime Video is not simply buying three hours of television. It is gaining an awards brand that can generate promotional beats throughout the year.

There is another piece moving underneath the deal. The Television Academy is working toward a merger with the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, with Abrego saying the process could be completed as early as mid-2027. If that happens, other ceremonies, including the Daytime Emmys, could eventually enter conversations with Prime Video, although those rights would require separate negotiations.

The gamble is whether Amazon can teach an audience accustomed to finding the Emmys on broadcast where to find them next. If Prime Video can make that transition seamless, the Academy may have finally found the continuity it wanted after decades of the wheel.

For the Emmys, the golden statue is staying the same. The business model surrounding it is not.
