Yet behind the image of one of America's most famous dynasties lies a story that has continued to spark discussion decades later. Now, that chapter is set to be revisited through a new psychological thriller.

Stories based on real-life events often shed light on lesser-known perspectives, and this upcoming project aims to explore one of the most heartbreaking episodes connected to the Kennedy family. Sasha Pieterse, best known for her role in Pretty Little Liars, has been cast as Rosemary Kennedy in the psychological thriller Rosemary. The film focuses on the life of the third child of Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. and Rose Kennedy, whose story remained largely hidden from public view for decades. Speaking about the role, Pieterse shared what attracted her to the project.

“Rosemary’s story has been told in fragments,” Pieterse, 30, said of the role, per Deadline. “What drew me to this project is how it explores her as a person, not a symbol, but a fully realized human being with dreams and vulnerabilities.”

Drawing inspiration from the All That's Interesting article Rosemary Kennedy, JFK's Sister Who Was Lobotomized And Locked Away, the film explores Rosemary Kennedy's mental health struggles and the life-altering consequences of the lobotomy arranged by her father, Joseph P. Kennedy Sr., when she was 23 years old. The casting places Pieterse at the center of a film that seeks to examine Rosemary's life beyond the headlines, offering audiences a more personal perspective on her experiences and struggles.

As attention turns to the filmmakers behind the project, new details reveal how they plan to approach this sensitive and complex story.

Inside the vision behind the upcoming psychological thriller

Rosemary will be written and directed by Cory Todd Hughes and Adrian Speckert, the filmmaking duo known for Under Fire starring Dylan Sprouse and Foster featuring Ron Perlman. The filmmakers emphasized that the project aims to go beyond a traditional historical retelling.

“This isn’t just a historical biopic. It’s a psychological journey told through Rosemary’s eyes, one that challenges the audience to reckon with how we define agency, dignity, and identity,” Hughes and Speckert said, per Deadline.
