Simu Liu has recently jokingly asked fans to support Avengers: Doomsday as if it were a small independent film. He referred to it as a little indie feature he is involved in. In a post promoting the movie’s release into theaters in December, Liu asked fans to help spread the word, pairing the tongue-in-cheek message with an image of the upcoming Marvel film’s poster. The playful post quickly went viral online, as the film is on a massive scale.

“Please help me support this little indie feature I'm a part of! It secured a theatrical release in December, and we all worked really hard on it. Please help us spread the word!!”, Liu humorously referred to the massive Marvel blockbuster.

In Avengers: Doomsday, Liu is set to reprise his role as Shang-Chi as with the actor himself hinting at his involvement through the X post. The character joins Earth’s mightiest heroes as the MCU expands its multiversal storyline, pitting his martial arts skills and mystical Ten Rings against a vastly different group of superpowered characters. The crossover also allows Shang-Chi to play in the larger franchise’s ensemble after carving out his own corner of the MCU in his 2021 debut.

The film further sees an unexpected clash between Shang-Chi and Gambit, with the two characters facing off inside a ruined X-Mansion. Gambit’s power to imbue playing cards with explosive kinetic energy stands in stark contrast to Shang-Chi’s hand-to-hand combat style and utilization of the Ten Rings. This meeting adds yet another interesting superhero pairing to the growing list of cross-franchise interactions in the film.

Before becoming one of the MCU’s newest heroes, Shang-Chi had to confront his family, his past, and the powerful legacy he had spent years trying to escape.

How did Shang-Chi become a Marvel hero?

In Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Simu Liu plays the titular character, a martial artist who has been on the run from his father, Wenwu, leader of the Ten Rings, for years. When his past catches up with him, Shang-Chi is forced into a conflict with his family, the Ten Rings, and the mysterious village of Ta Lo. Ultimately, he confronts Wenwu and fights the Dweller-in-Darkness, accepting his heritage and claiming the Ten Rings.

Even though Liu’s playful post adds a lighthearted moment to the build-up to Avengers: Doomsday, the movie itself is a huge step forward for Shang-Chi in the MCU. After creating the character in his own origin story, Liu is now stepping into a much larger superhero crossover, with new alliances, unexpected confrontations, and a much bigger threat ahead. It could mark the beginning of a much bigger chapter for Shang-Chi in the MCU.
