The Phineas and Ferb creator has spent decades mastering the art of animation, but even he has a few sharp thoughts when Hollywood swings for the cinematic fences. A playful Instagram post involving his daughter Mellie turned into an unexpectedly savage jab at Christopher Nolan’s upcoming The Odyssey. The joke quickly became something more, because the creator did not exactly hold back when explaining what he really thinks about the movie.
So what exactly did the Phineas and Ferb mastermind say about Nolan’s epic, and why did a joke from his daughter send him straight into a full cinematic roast?

Dan Povenmire addressed the exchange in a post on Instagram after his daughter Mellie joked that her father believed he could make The Odyssey, while Christopher Nolan could not make Phineas and Ferb. Povenmire immediately clarified that he never actually made that claim, but then delivered the punchline himself by admitting that, in his view, the criticism was not entirely wrong. He explained that his actual point was that the film’s cast and performances looked promising, while the movie itself left him completely unimpressed.
"So my daughter Mellie just posted, My dad thinks he could make The Odyssey, but Christopher Nolan couldn't make Phineas and Ferb. First of all, I did not say that, and second of all, that is 100% true," Povenmire posted on his Instagram.

The animator then took the joke several steps further, describing The Odyssey as “a boring a** movie” in his characteristically blunt style. Povenmire acknowledged some genuinely strong performances in the film and suggested that the cast deserved better material, making his criticism less about the actors and more about the overall experience. It is a surprisingly sharp opinion from someone whose own career has been built around keeping audiences entertained with absurd inventions, rapid-fire comedy, and songs that somehow refuse to leave your head.
But Povenmire’s sharp take hits differently when you remember just how long he has been keeping audiences glued to the screen.
The Phineas and Ferb creator knows a thing or two about keeping audiences hooked
Dan Povenmire is best known as the co-creator of Phineas and Ferb, the Disney hit he developed alongside Jeff “Swampy” Marsh, but his animation resume stretches far beyond the backyard of Danville. He spent years writing, storyboarding, and directing for major shows including The Simpsons, Family Guy, SpongeBob SquarePants, and Rocko’s Modern Life before creating his own Disney franchises. He also became inseparable from Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz, providing the character’s distinctive voice while filling the series with increasingly ridiculous “Inators” and helping shape more than 500 songs across his animated work.

Povenmire has also remained deeply involved with the franchise that made him famous, returning as executive producer, writer, and Doofenshmirtz voice actor for the Phineas and Ferb revival after its decade-long break. Disney ordered 40 new episodes, split across two seasons, with another season and a new feature-length movie in development, while the planned movie will revolve around a time-warp adventure that threatens to erase Phineas and Ferb’s existence as brothers.
Whether audiences agree with his take remains another question entirely, especially with Nolan’s epic grossing over $1.15 billion worldwide, officially becoming the highest-grossing film of Nolan's career by surpassing The Dark Knight Rises.
