The Lovely Bones is one of the most talked-about films from Peter Jackson. More than a decade after the film's release, Jackson has finally shared his perspective on the controversial casting decision. 

While giving an interview at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year via Entertainment Weekly, Peter Jackson spoke about the replacement of Ryan Gosling in The Lovely Bones. While speaking about it, Peter Jackson took complete blame on himself for the recasting. He clarified that the replacement of an actor always meant that the role was cast wrongly by the director and not because of any problem with the actor's performance.

"Ryan is a fantastic actor, as we know," Jackson said.

He added, "It's just a complicated sort of amalgam of communication of how somebody gels into a group of people, into a story, into a character". 

Jackson further explained to Entertainment Weekly that the filmmakers eventually realized the character no longer matched the version they had originally envisioned, prompting them to recast the role. The director said the issue was never about the actor's performance or commitment. Instead, he stressed that the creative team had misjudged the casting from the outset, making it their responsibility to make a difficult decision before production moved forward. 

Meanwhile, The Ghost Rider star also opened about the same. Appearing as a guest on the March 19, 2026 episode of Happy Sad Confused by Josh Horowitz to promote Project Hail Mary, Gosling revealed that he had packed on about 60 pounds of weight in preparation for the part,, since he felt that the grieving father needed to look like that. The allegedly caused the issue.

The casting controversy was only one chapter in the film's complicated journey after its release. 

The Lovely Bones did not do well commercially, despite its star-studded cast and acclaimed source material. The film was made on a budget of $65 million and earned $93.6 million worldwide, including $44.1 million in North America and $49.5 million in other territories. It was released in a limited release on December 11, 2009, and went into wide release on January 15, 2010. 

Now, Peter Jackson’s latest comments more than 15 years after The Lovely Bones premiered have shed new light on one of the most talked-about casting controversies in Hollywood. The filmmaker, however, shied away from blaming Ryan Gosling and instead pointed to the creative team’s own decisions, taking full responsibility for the actor’s departure.
