The decades-old drama behind Ryan Gosling’s exit from The Lovely Bones is finally clarified by director Peter Jackson. The director took full responsibility, admitting that the mistake lay with him and the production team for not casting the right actor for the role. After Ryan Gosling was initially cast to play Jack Salmon in the 2009 thriller, he was replaced by Mark Wahlberg before filming began.

Now, before Jackson’s recent comments, Gosling had also spoken about his exit in earlier interviews. And it appears that the actor may have been mistaken about the reason for the replacement.

During a conversation with journalist Didier Allouch at the Cannes Film Festival, director Peter Jackson admitted that filmmakers sometimes make mistakes while casting an actor for a role. And something similar happened during the making of The Lovely Bones. While he praised Ryan Gosling as an amazing actor, he clarified that the recasting was not Gosling’s fault.

“Anytime we recast an actor, it's actually our fault because we didn't get the casting right and we cast the wrong person for a role. It's not because they did anything wrong,” he said.

He further added, “It's complicated, and usually you try very hard when you're planning the film, casting it, trying to get that gel kind of right, but occasionally we make our own mistakes.”

But until now, Ryan Gosling had pointed to his appearance and creative differences as the reasons for his exit from The Lovely Bones. Back in 2010, he told The Hollywood Reporter that he and the director had different ideas about what a grieving father should look like, and that he may have made a mistake by gaining 60 pounds for the role.

He also pointed to a lack of communication during the pre-production process, which may have led to the disconnect between them. While Gosling’s first explanation of his weight may not be accurate after Jackson’s recent clarification, his comments about the communication gap seem more in line with what the director described. But looking closely at the situation, as well as the casting shift from Gosling to Mark Wahlberg, there is much more about the role and the creative differences involved.

Saoirse Ronan, who was also part of the film, had previously spoken about Gosling’s exit as well.

Saoirse Ronan called Ryan Gosling’s exit valid

During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast in 2024, Saoirse Ronan shared that she was saddened by Ryan Gosling’s exit from The Lovely Bones. However, she also called the decision completely valid when it came to the character. Over time, she said she had spoken to both Gosling and director Peter Jackson, who is set to be honored at the 2026 Cannes film festival, about the situation, and she seemingly came to understand and agree with the last-minute casting change.

“It it's not personal, necessarily. It's like sometimes you're just not on the same page,” she said.

She further explained that Mark Wahlberg’s age may have made him a more fitting choice for the role. Wahlberg was in his 40s at the time, while Gosling was in his 20s. While Ronan and Gosling later went on to work together on different projects, Gosling and Jackson have yet to collaborate again. Perhaps that is why it took so long for the reason behind his exit from the film to finally come to light.
