In a recent chat with ScreenRant, Peter Claffey delved back to the time when he and Ansell shared A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms screen and told how their on-screen chemistry developed so naturally that it nearly seemed preordained. The two spent a lot of time together off-set in Belfast, most notably getting close by playing Mario Kart and arcade games every weekend.
"They only did one chemistry read, because we clicked on that day. Then we had two months of prep before we got into it. We spent a lot of time at the arcade and went for food. I just got to know him, got to know his family, and they're just really lovely, down-to-earth, nice people," Claffey explained to ScreenRant.
The duo's 18-year age difference did not ultimately create a barrier between them, but churned out a sincere friendship that reflected on-screen smoothly. In fact, Claffey had been protective of the child actor from the get-go and could not stop praising his talents.
"Towards the end, when you're coming in working with a child actor, you think you're going to have to bring this person along and protect them. And a lot of the times, I was looking up to him for some of the performances he gave. He's got a huge career ahead of him," Claffey told the outlet.
The bond between Claffey and Ansell was noticeable from the beginning. Showrunners and producers pointed out that the last chemistry read they had with the two made the casting decision a no-brainer, which is very much an indicator of how natural their bond was. This down-to-earth, touching relationship of Dunk and Egg, both on and off the screen, is a major factor in the tone of the series, blending humor, trust, and mutual respect in the captivating knight and his squire duo.
In this rich world created by George R.R. Martin, Dunk and Egg sow the seeds of warmth, humor, and friendship, amplifying expectations for what is to come.
