Hasbro's beloved children's series Peppa Pig has come under fire after reports claimed child voice actors were asked to sign contracts allowing their recorded voices to be used by artificial intelligence. According to Deadline, almost 1,000 people have signed an open letter condemning AI terms on an international children’s franchise, organized by the Agents of Young Performers Association (AYPA).

Industry sources say AI clauses are now a regular feature of children’s TV and film projects. However, Hasbro’s acceptance of the terms on Peppa Pig has become a lightning rod for concern. Critics argue that children cannot provide informed consent for such agreements. They are now calling for stronger safeguards against the unrestricted use of AI-generated voices.

“Where the performer is a child, consent must be treated with the greatest of care. Children cannot provide fully informed legal consent, and a parent or guardian’s approval should never be used as a blanket licence to capture, clone, train, or reuse a child’s voice indefinitely,” the letter said, as per Deadline, warning that children's voices should not be captured or reused by AI through broad contractual agreements.

The open letter does not name Peppa Pig, and the AYPA declined to identify the series. But industry sources have informed Deadline that it refers to the beloved show. Nevertheless, a spokesperson told Deadline that Hasbro was committed to protecting child performers and wanted to approach discussions about artificial intelligence responsibly and transparently.

Hasbro bought Peppa Pig in 2019 as part of its $4 billion acquisition of Entertainment One (eOne). In the deal, the toy giant bought the franchise and its huge entertainment and merchandise rights. Peppa Pig was retained by the company after the sale of most of eOne’s other assets and is still one of the biggest family brands of Hasbro.

The Peppa Pig controversy highlights the growing debate over balancing AI innovation with performers' rights. While Hasbro says it is committed to using artificial intelligence responsibly, critics argue that stronger safeguards are needed, especially for child actors. As AI becomes more common in entertainment, questions around consent and voice ownership are likely to remain in focus.
