The Office may have left Dunder Mifflin behind, but its documentary crew clearly has not retired. The beloved NBC comedy has become one of television’s most enduring cultural fixtures, inspiring endless rewatches, pilgrimages to Scranton and a fanbase that can probably identify an episode from a single awkward pause. Now, the series is getting another look through the people who kept it alive long after the cameras stopped rolling with Fan Level Midnight.

Just as Peacock prepares to return to The Office universe with spin-offs, another project is opening the documentary crew’s archive. 

As per an exclusive by Deadline, Peacock has acquired Fan Level Midnight: Devoted to The Office, a six-episode documentary series directed by Shawn Cauthen. The series explores the history and cultural impact of specifically the American version of The Office, tracing its journey from an uncertain beginning to a television phenomenon. Set to premiere exclusively on Peacock on September 7, it is aimed at giving fans a closer look at the show that became far bigger than its fictional paper company.

The documentary goes beyond the familiar cast interviews, focusing on the people who turned The Office into a lasting obsession. Interviews will include Paul Feig, Leslie David Baker, Andy Buckley and former NBC Entertainment president Kevin Reilly. In addition, the archival material brings back familiar faces and behind the scenes memories with Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, Ed Helms, Jenna Fischer, Greg Daniels, John Krasinski, Angela Kinsey, Phyllis Smith, Will Ferrell and others, as per Deadline.

But there is another reason this documentary arrives at a particularly convenient moment for Peacock, and it leads straight back to The Office's successor-of-sorts, The Paper.

The timing is almost too neat: one documentary crew finishes revisiting Dunder Mifflin just before finding another workplace worth filming. The Paper, the mockumentary spinoff set in The Office universe, is all set to return for its second season on September 9, just two days after Fan Level Midnight premieres. The connection here appears to be a little more than a simple scheduling coincidence.

The fictional documentary crew that once followed the employees of Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch has now turned its attention to the Toledo Truth Teller, a struggling Ohio newspaper trying to find its footing. Season 2 picks up after the staff’s Ohio Journalism Awards success. This time, editor in chief Ned Sampson (Domhnall Gleeson) is brewing up a "journalistic crusade" and sets his sights on a local private club, potentially putting the newspaper itself at risk.

With Fan Level Midnight: Devoted to The Office arriving first, Peacock is effectively giving viewers the real history of the documentary phenomenon before sending that same fictional camera crew back into the field.
