Paul Bettany’s commitment to playing Vision left him with ten burst blood vessels in one eye, and Marvel with visual-effects work to do, the actor has shared. The character’s return in VisionQuest finds him navigating a peculiar aftermath: his memories have been restored, but the feelings once attached to them remain out of reach.

As Vision retreats into a quiet existence in Scotland and tries to make sense of humanity, Bettany’s attempt to inhabit that disorientation became quite considerably more physical than intended. A restored memory does not necessarily mean a restored sense of self, and Vision’s latest chapter takes that uncertainty somewhere rather unexpected, even for Bettany.

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live on October 30, Paul Bettany explained that Vision’s inner world is a mansion-like “mind space,” populated by AIs with different personalities. They help him sort through stored data about humanity, much like RAM. The actor compared the concept to Inside Out, before the conversation turned to a photograph Bettany had brought along.

In the picture, Bettany could be seen sporting a red eye, which he went on to explain was a result of an intense acting session done to translate the intensity of Vision's psychological experiences.

“I was just wildly overacting,” Bettany admitted, explaining that he had “blown out about 10 blood vessels” in his eye. The actor then revealed that the injury lasted for about 2 weeks, during which Marvel had to take last measures.

"And I think it cost, it must have cost production so much to take it out," Bettany recalled. And while called the result “gorgeous,” he was not shy about having been humbled by the incident and learnt something about quality over quantity.

"I mean, it was a lesson in less is more,” Bettany said on the late-night show.

Bettany’s stories about the show were not the only unexpected detour in the interview; his childhood memories of Halloween offered another rather revealing glimpse of the actor.

Paul Bettany’s complicated relationship with Halloween

Growing up in London, Paul Bettany did not experience Halloween as the elaborate celebration it has become in parts of the United States. In the same Jimmy Kimmel Live appearance, he explained that the holiday existed in the UK, but his neighborhood did not really mark it, and children only began to understand trick-or-treating after watching E.T.

The lesson did not translate smoothly into real life either, because when they knocked on doors calling “trick-or-treat,” adults who had not seen the film simply did not quite understand what they wanted, or why.

That early confusion left Bettany with a suspicion of the holiday that has followed him to New York. He joked that Halloween makes it difficult to distinguish “the weirdos from the normal people,” especially when children disappear into crowds of identical costumes. He even admitted that he can lose sight of his own kids.

His reservations may be less about dressing up than the chaos of the occasion, but the stories offered a glimpse of Bettany’s dry humor beyond Marvel.
