The 2026 Cannes Film Festival ended with rare ties in the Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Actress categories, prompting Jury President Park Chan-wook to explain that the panel simply “could not decide” between several standout contenders. The ceremony also made history with Japan earning its first-ever Best Actress win at Cannes. The unexpected results quickly became one of the festival’s biggest talking points, especially as Cannes is traditionally known for making definitive artistic choices.

Questions surrounding the jury’s decision-making process soon dominated the post-awards press conference, where Park and fellow jurors shed more light on why this year’s winners proved impossible to separate.

During the closing press conference of the 79th Cannes Film Festival, Park Chan-wook addressed questions surrounding the jury’s unusual decision to hand out ties in major categories. The festival awarded a shared Best Director prize to Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi for La Bola Negra and Paweł Pawlikowski for Fatherland, while Best Actor was jointly given to Emmanuel Macchia and Valentin Campagne for Coward. In the Best Actress category, Japanese actress Tao Okamo, making it a first win for Japan and Virginie Efira shared the honor for their performances in All Of A Sudden, with the acting ties drawing particular attention from international press and cinephiles alike.

“As far as the director award, to emphasize this again, both filmmakers did an amazing job with their work and we couldn’t decide whether one was better than the other,” Park Chan-wook said during the post-awards press conference.

Jury member Chloé Zhao also elaborated on the emotional connection the panel felt toward the winning performances, explaining that many of the selected films explored loneliness, love, and fragile human relationships in deeply moving ways. According to Zhao, the jury was drawn not only to the actors themselves but also to the tenderness shared between the characters onscreen, which ultimately influenced their decision to recognize multiple performances instead of choosing a single winner.

That emotional resonance and willingness to reward bold storytelling also carried into the festival’s biggest prize winner.

How Fjord became Cristian Mungiu’s biggest Cannes triumph?

Fjord emerged as the biggest winner of Cannes 2026 after taking home the Palme d’Or, making Cristian Mungiu only the tenth director in history to win the festival’s top prize twice. The victory also extended Neon’s remarkable Palme d’Or streak to seven consecutive wins as distributor. Starring Renate Reinsve alongside Sebastian Stan, the film follows a deeply religious Romanian-Norwegian couple whose traditional beliefs clash with Norway’s child welfare system, drawing inspiration from real-life events that shook the country nearly a decade ago.

Fjord marked Mungiu’s first feature shot entirely outside Romania and his first English-language film, a creative gamble that ultimately paid off on cinema’s grandest stage. The premiere earned a standing ovation reportedly lasting between ten and twelve minutes, signaling early awards momentum. Beyond the Palme d’Or, the film also secured the François Chalais Prize, the FIPRESCI Award, and the Ecumenical Jury Prize.

Meanwhile, Renate Reinsve added another remarkable chapter to her Cannes journey. After winning Best Actress in 2021 for The Worst Person in the World, being part of Armand’s Camera d’Or success in 2024, and earning the Grand Prix for Sentimental Value in 2025, she now headlines the Palme d’Or-winning Fjord in 2026, a run that cements her as one of Cannes’ defining modern stars.

The 2026 festival ultimately showcased a Cannes jury more interested in honoring emotional impact and artistic resonance than enforcing strict distinctions between winners. From historic acting ties to Fjord’s sweeping success, this year’s ceremony may be remembered as one of the festival’s most emotionally driven editions in recent memory.
