‘Paranormal Activity’ Is Gearing Up for Its Next Big Scare

Paranormal Activity is a horror legend on its own across generations of film enthusiasts, and the original creator only had a shoestring budget and a dream. A phenomenon that just had to be witnessed when it came out, its found-footage scare later became a blueprint in the game. And now there is no need to wait long for a new nightmare from the horror film franchise.

Paranormal Activity is returning soon, and it is not too far away from delivering yet another genre defining horror epic, this time backed by notable horror icons.

Paramount Pictures and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster plan to render the summer of 2027 a spooky flavor, having set a May 21, 2027, release date for the next installment of the Paranormal Activity series. Marking a monumental return of the long-established found-footage horror series to theaters, this new chapter will be the eighth part of the franchise.

Backed by horror mastermind James Wan (The Conjuring and Insidious), Jason Blum, and Oren Peli, who was the original creator, with worldwide distribution by Paramount, the upcoming movie, which is yet to be named, will be helmed by Ian Tuason. The Toronto-based writer-director has already made a name for himself in the horror genre with viral live-action virtual reality horror shorts on YouTube and his feature debut, Undertone, which dabbles into paranormal audio instead of footage.

“I’ve been a huge admirer of Paranormal Activity since the brilliant first movie, with its creeping slow burn and subtle ability to make the unseen terrifying. I’m looking forward to expanding on its legacy and helping shape the next evolution of this scary found-footage franchise,” Wan shared with The Hollywood Reporter while gushing about the legendary horror franchise and its thrilling new chapter.

However, coming from Blum, his involvement in the eighth film of the franchise is surprising given his 2022 statement to Variety, where he openly slammed the 2021 instalment. Blum was not a fan of Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, directed by  William Eubank, which earned only 4.8/10 average ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, particularly getting criticism for its lack of effective scares compared to its incredibly successful predecessors.

Every Paranormal Activity movie to watch before James Wan's 2027 sequel arrives

Staying on brand with its signature creeping terror and a subtle lingering dread made Paranormal Activity (2007) a cultural phenomenon. It is still considered one of the best horror movies of all time. The film series comprises seven instalments with the eighth impending. However, the chronology of its plot does not abide by its release order.

To study the horror epic franchises to the fullest with all its intricate lore and phenomenal scares, start with Paranormal Activity 3 (2011), followed by Paranormal Activity 2 (2010), Paranormal Activity (2007), Paranormal Activity 4 (2012), Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014), Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension (2015), and then the stand-alone Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin (2021).

But for the uninitiated viewer, the franchise should be watched in its release order as intended by the creators so as not to dissipate the nuanced horror revelations or context of the first film, which arrived later in the prequels. Presumed knowledge of the lore only dilutes the elements of the scares that make Paranormal Activity stand apart and build further excitement for the 8th movie.
