The Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery merger is facing a new hurdle. The deal has been heavily debated in Hollywood, with many publicly criticizing and opposing it for the potential risks. Earlier, amid intense criticism from fans, Hollywood celebrities, and notable names in the industry, a coalition of 12 state attorneys general sued to block the deal in July of this year. 

After much conversation, the antitrust case has finally received a trial date and a preliminary scheduling order from the judge. However, under the new schedule, Paramount could face the issue of paying more than $1 billion to Warner Bros. Discovery.

Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin has finally set the trial date for March 2, 2027. The trial will run for 12 court days through March 19. The judge further stated that a final pretrial conference will be held on February 24, 2027, while ordering the parties to submit their filings before noon on August 13, 2026.

But while the case has a trial date, Paramount may have to face massive ticking-fee payments to Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders. Paramount is expected to pay $7 million per day, starting October 1, 2026, until the deal is completed. Now, during the July filings, the company had requested that the antitrust trial be scheduled for November.

Meanwhile, the coalition of 12 state attorneys general, led by California Attorney General Rob Bonta and the Writers Guild of America, which also sued to block the merger, had requested a trial date in April 2027. Now, the period from October 1, 2026, to the start of the trial is almost five months, so the company may have to pay nearly $1.2 billion to WBD shareholders. Apart from the case, many are still talking about the potential of this merger. While some, including Paramount, argue that the merger would be advantageous, others believe that it could result in fewer projects and job losses.

Most recently, Zoe Saldaña also shared her refreshing take on the matter.

During the New York City premiere of Lioness Season 3, Zoe Saldaña addressed the proposed merger. She said she is asking questions and trying to understand the situation with little help from several legendary directors and respected members of the Hollywood community. Saldaña added that she is still in the research phase and believes people should not be distracted by the surrounding "trolling" and noise. 

“If there's noise to not listen to, it's the trolling noise. It's doing the research on your own and trying to educate yourself and understand why something works and why it doesn't before we jump on a headline or a sound bite and we amplify a very negative message that can actually become harmful,” she told Variety.

Meanwhile, several actors have openly criticized the merger. Emma Thompson, Javier Bardem, and many others signed a letter opposing the deal, as per the BBC. At the same time, Benedict Cumberbatch and Alan Cumming even urged the UK government to take a stand. The latest development has only added to the pressure on Paramount to complete its merger with Warner Bros. Discovery while the world continues to debate it.
