Patrick Stewart once opened up about his one big regret concerning his relationship with his children. The late legendary actor was well known for playing mentor-like characters in two of the most popular franchises. He appeared as Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films and Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the Star Trek franchise.

Over the years, the actor portrayed characters known for their wisdom and compassion, often played as father figures who guided those around them. However, Stewart believed he had not been able to do the same as a father in his own life. Years before his death, the actor made a heartbreaking confession about his relationship with his children.

Patrick Stewart talks about his non-existent relationship with his kids

Back in 2023, Patrick Stewart revealed in an interview with the Irish Independent that he had always felt pain over his "non-existent" relationship with his children. The actor shares two children, son Daniel and daughter Sophie, with his ex-wife, Sheila Falconer. Both of his children are now in their 50s. Stewart confessed that he had always prioritised his acting career over everything else in his life.

“There’s not a day that goes by that I’m not pained by the memory of my children, who they were and by a sense of responsibility that they became who they are in part because of me and my influence or lack of influence on them,” Stewart said.

During the interview, he was also asked whether the mentor figure he portrayed in the Star Trek franchise was the kind of father he had hoped to have. However, the actor shared that he played the character as the kind of father he had hoped to be to his own children. He acknowledged that all his children are now grown up but added that he did not wish to repeat the same mistakes.

“I’m trying to correct that now whenever possible with my grandchildren,” he said.

While he did have one regret concerning his children, the actor said that they seemed to have forgiven him. Although Stewart has openly spoken about his regrets as a father, his personal life also saw its share of changes and turning points.

Patrick Stewart found love again in life

Patrick Stewart and Sheila Falconer parted ways in 1990. Later, in 2000, the actor married Wendy Neuss. However, the two parted ways just three years later. But Patrick found love again when he met singer Sunny Ozell in 2008, who was working at a restaurant at the time.

The two later married in 2013, and she stayed by his side during the final days of his life. According to his representative, Kelly Bush Novak, the actor struggled with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia for a brief period before passing away on October 28, 2026. Despite any regrets he may have had, the actor spent his final moments surrounded by his family, friends, and loved ones.
