Mary Steenburgen Shares Her Experience on Presenting Emily Blunt at the Oscars for Her “fierce” Work in 'Oppenheimer'

Emily Blunt got loads of praise for her performance as the female lead, or what some might argue is a somewhat conventional role of the long-suffering wife in an Oscar-contending film. Even after having a filmography with accolades like a Golden Globe, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and BAFTA nominations, she has never been on the Academy's radar. Oppenheimer was the movie that led the Academy to finally recognize Blunt. But she got passed over by the jury again at the 2024 Oscars.

Despite the ups and downs, the event turned out to be unforgettable for her. And she has Mary Steenburgen, her Oscar presenter, to thank for it as well. Steenburgen delivered a moving speech honoring Emily Blunt's performance in Oppenheimer. Now, days after the ceremony, Steenburgen has once again looked back on the special moment.

This year, at the Oscars, the Academy brought back the Field of Dreams format for the award presentation. To introduce Emily Blunt, Mary Steenburgen took to the stage, wearing the iconic black and floral jacket she wore in 1981 when she nabbed the award for Melvin and Howard. The 71-year-old actress recently took to Instagram to reminisce about presenting Blunt for her fierce and heartbreaking work in the Christopher Nolan film.

She talked about how, from the stage, she saw Emily Blunt shining in that moment, with John Krasinski barely holding back tears. Steenburgen expressed at the Oscars how blown away she was by Blunt's performance. "Emily, I am so proud to be your friend," Steenburgen said. Her words got the Oppenheimer actress choked up, and as tears filled her eyes, Krasinski, reached over to grab her hand in a sweet moment. And this was not the only sweet moment Blunt and Krasinski shared.

The couple shared a moment on the red carpet that had the internet falling in love with them all over again.

Blunt, catching sight of him from the corner of her eye, hurried over to give him a warm hug. This heartwarming moment quickly spread among fans on social media, dispelling any lingering divorce rumors surrounding the couple.
