Oscar Issac Reveals How a Willen Dafoe Answer Pushed Him to Do 'Moonknight' in MCU
Whether as a brilliant scientist or a complicated husband, Oscar Isaac has never struggled to portray multiple, vastly different roles. But in Moon Knight, the actor, who plays a former mercenary, took on several personalities due to the character’s complex dissociative identity disorder, all while trying to save the world from looming threats.
His performance as Moon Knight, in which he effortlessly shifted between accents, body language, and even voices, quickly drew praise. However, as Isaac revealed, it might not have happened without the influence of Willem Dafoe.

Oscar Isaac recently appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast for a conversation with Josh Horowitz. He explained that it was Mohamed Diab’s film Cairo 678 that first caught his attention. Later, during a conversation with Willem Dafoe, the Lighthouse actor mentioned that he looks for characters that have space to experiment and he can make it his own. That idea intrigued Isaac and drew him toward Moon Knight.
“In that one [Moon Knight], I just saw a lot of space to be like, 'what if we really take it seriously and really look into what it's like to experience the ID. Then, there's an opportunity to do something special with it," he said.
Soon, Josh Horowitz and Oscar Isaac’s conversation steered toward whether he would be willing to suit up again and explore more stories with the character. After all, this is something fans have been eagerly waiting for. While a second season of Moon Knight has not been officially discussed yet, there is still a chance he could pop up in another Marvel Studios project, like Midnight Sons.
That said, Isaac hinted that the project could be a reality, and he may return to reprise his role.
Can Oscar Isaac appear in Midnight Suns?
Oscar Isaac has sparked a chatter and debate about the future of Moon Knight, and even teased that he could appear in the Midnight Sons movie. During the same episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Isaac hinted that the right tone and story are important.
“There was an interesting talk about Midnight Sons. I mean, again, 'fragility' is not the right word, but tonally, it's really important, because we're playing with real stuff with that one. It's expressing something very real, and challenging, and difficult. I feel like if you're going to go... you gotta take it really seriously,” he said.

Later, Horowitz shared that he is up for the idea of Ryan Gosling as Ghost Rider in the movie. Isaac seemed impressed with the idea, calling it a “no-brainer” and urging Marvel to make it happen. The pairing of Isaac’s intense Moon Knight with Gosling’s potential Ghost Rider already feels like the perfect match made in Marvel heaven. If the chatter proves true, this supernatural crossover could be the next big swing for Marvel Studios.
