Oscar Isaac Never Truly Got What He Wanted From His Iconic ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Role

Every actor has a couple of movies in their filmography that haunt them for the rest of their career. They would go on to answer for the sins of the project for a long time, even if they have other masterpieces under their belt. One such rotten apple in Oscar Isaac’s case is the 2016 X-Men movie, Apocalypse

Despite featuring big names like Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, and Isaac himself, the Brian Singer directorial failed to impress the audiences and critics alike. But it has been ten years since that debacle, and the questions about that project still follow Isaac.

Recently, he was again asked about working in the movie, and he revealed that the reason he signed the film never came to pass.

Oscar Isaac details why he joined X-Men: Apocalypse

Oscar Isaac made an appearance on this week's Hot Ones, and so, perhaps in keeping with the show's theme, he was asked to discuss his time working on X-Men: Apocalypse once more. He quickly recounted why he said yes to working on the movie and what he truly wanted out of that project.

“One of the big reasons I did the job, I was like, ‘Fassbender? Jennifer Lawrence? McAvoy? All these amazing actors. Yeah!” Isaac said.

It turns out that the actor only wanted to see these brilliant actors in action and work closely with them. However, it did not actually work out exactly that way.

“And then I never saw any of them because I was so overheated. And like, I couldn’t turn. So, I just got put in this cooling tent,”  Isaac added further.

All the prosthetics used to transform him into Apocalypse, the main antagonist of the movie, made him overheat, and he had to be in a cooling tent when not shooting. This caused him to be isolated most of the time, and even in between the scenes, he could not see his co-stars due to the heavy layers of latex and glue.

Despite his ordeal on the sets of the movie and its poor box-office run, Oscar Isaac never really spoke out against the film.

Oscar Isaac’s stand on X-Men: Apocalypse

Oscar Isaac has never criticized the film itself, despite its difficult production process and the ultimate outcome. When questioned about the mediocre reviews it garnered in 2022, he told The New York Times, he will not forsake the film or cut ties with it.

“I know exactly what I went in there wanting to do and the reasons why,” Isaac said. He further talked about his love for X-Men growing up, and that he liked the character of Apocalypse when he was a kid. He cherishes the time on the sets of Apocalypse and is grateful for the experience.

He did wish that if the makers had cared about the characters a little more, the film would have turned out a little better. But the actor also acknowledged that those are the risks one has to take in this job. While the actor’s appearance on this week’s Hot Ones has once again opened up the never-ending topic of Apocalypse, the actor was actually there to promote his latest venture, Beef season 2, the trailer for which has won hearts. Anyhow, his comments on Apocalypse show how closely he holds all of his projects.
