Bill Burr has built much of his comedy around saying exactly what he thinks, so when it comes to Mark Zuckerberg, the comedian apparently has no interest in getting too close to the Facebook founder. Burr is currently part of the cast of The Social Reckoning, Aaron Sorkin’s follow-up to The Social Network, which takes a closer look at Facebook and the wider consequences of social media.
But while Burr is happy to play a character caught up in that world, he has a very good reason for keeping Zuckerberg at arm’s length.

Speaking on the red carpet at The Social Reckoning premiere, Bill Burr was having a conversation with a journalist about how he could have Mark Zuckerberg on his podcast. His answer to this, however, was an immediate no.
“Nothing’s free. You don’t want to have a relationship," he said.

"Because then, all of a sudden, you have a friendship and you can’t make fun of them,” Burr explained to Variety, saying he would rather not establish a personal relationship with someone he might want to make jokes about later.
The film, which hits theaters October 9, stars Jeremy Strong as Zuckerberg, with Jeremy Allen White and Mikey Madison playing Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz and Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen, respectively.
While Burr wants to keep his distance from Big Tech’s biggest names, Jeremy Allen White is taking the conversation a step further, calling for stronger safeguards around the industry.

Bill Burr may be focused on keeping his comedic distance from tech billionaires, but his co-star Jeremy Allen White is taking a more serious view of the issues explored in The Social Reckoning. Speaking on the same red carpet, White said the film's subject matter feels “incredibly important” and argued that major technology companies need stronger safeguards.
“It feels incredibly important. Look, there needs to be safeguards in place. In my mind, I think third-party regulation for a lot of these big tech companies might be a good idea,” he said.

White has previously elaborated on the idea to the Press Association (via The Standard), comparing Big Tech to industries such as aviation and pharmaceuticals, where independent regulators already play a role. He said he hopes the movie sparks conversations about whether similar oversight should exist for massive technology companies.
With The Social Reckoning arriving in theaters on October 9, Burr and White may have very different ways of approaching the subject—but both are clearly keeping the conversation around Big Tech alive.
