Few video game franchises have blended Disney magic and Square Enix fantasy as boldly as Kingdom Hearts. So much so that since its launch in 2002, Kingdom Hearts has grown into one of gaming’s most iconic crossover franchises. It stars a young hero named Sora, who travels across various Disney-themed worlds with Donald Duck and Goofy. Now, Jared Bush is teasing the possibility of a series centered on the beloved game, offering fans a glimpse of how the franchise might expand beyond the video game space. 

With its mix of Disney magic, Square Enix characters and a rich original mythology, Kingdom Hearts has long seemed like a natural fit for a screen adaptation. 

IGN has spoken with Walt Disney Animation Studios Chief Creative Officer Jared Bush about the possibility of a Kingdom Hearts series, with Bush stating that everything is possible when talking about future projects. The comments sparked renewed interest in the possibility of a big-screen adaptation of the much-loved Disney and Square Enix crossover franchise. However, even though Bush did not confirm that a series is in the works, his comments suggest the idea is not being dismissed as Disney seeks out new ways to deliver stories to audiences. 

“So I would just say, nothing is impossible,” Bush said, leaving the possibility of a Kingdom Hearts series open for the future. 

While talking to IGN's Jeffrey Vega, Bush said that he is always interested in hearing about projects that fans are passionate about. He also pointed to the bright future of Disney Animation, further noting that the studio has several new projects in development and is exploring different ways of bringing stories and creative material to audiences.

Behind the potential adaptation is a sprawling story built around Sora, the Keyblade and his battles against some of the franchise’s most powerful forces. 

In Kingdom Hearts, Sora, a young Keyblade wielder, travels to the animated worlds of Disney and Pixar movies, like Zootopia, Coco, and others. In the first game, Sora looks for his friends, fights the Heartless, and defeats Ansem. He battles Organization XIII and its leader, Xemnas in Kingdom Hearts II. In Kingdom Hearts III, Sora regains his powers, teams up with other Keyblade wielders to defeat Master Xehanort and Organization XIII, and brings the saga to a major conclusion. 

While a Kingdom Hearts series is still a long way off, Jared Bush’s comments have opened up an interesting possibility for one of gaming’s most beloved crossover franchises. With its extensive mythology, iconic Disney characters and rich world, the series certainly has plenty of material for a big-screen adaptation. For now, fans can only speculate on what the game would look like in the form of a show, but Bush’s "nothing is impossible" comment leaves the door open.
