Matt Damon has drawn a firm line on future movie transformations, and packing on weight for a role is no longer part of the plan. The actor took on the demanding role of Odysseus in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, a part that pushed him harder than any before it. Filming took him across Iceland, Scotland, Greece, Italy, and Morocco, on what he now calls the hardest project of his career. Wrapping the shoot appears to have pushed him toward a decision he had been circling for years.
While shedding pounds proved grueling enough, Damon's real boundary traces back to a very different physical transformation years earlier.

The weight loss Matt Damon underwent for his role in The Odyssey pushed him to look back and make a decision that packing on weight for a character is something his past, not his future, self will do. Back in 2009, the actor famously gained a large amount of weight to play a soft, disheveled businessman in The Informant! In his mid-fifties now, Damon views that kind of transformation very differently than he did in his late thirties.
"I didn't change it in an unhealthy way. I think if I had done the opposite and put weight on, that would have been dangerous and it's not something I'll do anymore," Damon said, reflecting on his choice to lose weight instead for The Odyssey.
He then added, "I was happy to do it earlier in my life," drawing a clear line between then and now.

Damon told PEOPLE that the production felt closer to an expedition than a traditional film set. Christopher Nolan endured the same brutal conditions alongside the cast, standing cold and soaked through frigid weather at every location. Despite the exhausting pace, Damon found unexpected motivation in his daughter, who rarely praises his work. Her simple comment, delivered right after watching the finished film, became the moment that made every difficult week worthwhile for the actor.
While pride over the finished film ran deep, Damon faced a far more personal battle behind the scenes.
Matt Damon confronts his claustrophobia while filming The Odyssey
Beyond the physical transformation, Matt Damon battled a lifelong fear of enclosed spaces throughout production. Freezing water blasted repeatedly from massive jet engines, while tight, confined sets forced him into prolonged stretches of genuine discomfort. Being sealed inside a giant wooden horse became one of the hardest moments of the entire process. Damon said he worked through many personal fears during this project, describing claustrophobia as one he now believes he has moved past.

His anxiety extends beyond tight spaces, touching heights and snakes as well, fears he has openly discussed for years. Facing all of it directly on The Odyssey pushed Damon toward genuine personal growth alongside his physical reinvention. Weight loss delivered results this time, yet Damon has made his boundary clear for anything ahead. Gaining weight for a role, he confirmed, is simply not something he will do again.
