Seth Green has broken his silence on why he was not called back to Sunnydale for the reboot. Buffy the Vampire Slayer remains one of television’s most recognizable supernatural dramas, and its legacy has continued long after the original series ended in 2003. The series turned Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Buffy Summers into an iconic television character and introduced audiences to a memorable ensemble, including Seth Green’s Oz.

Green's Oz was widely loved, often labeled as the "gentle wolf" who brought calm and real kindness to a chaotic show by the fans. So when talk around the reboot, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, took place with Green not seen as a part of it, it left a sour taste for many fans.

While the reboot now stands cancelled, Green has broken his silence on why he was not called in for the same.

Seth Green has clarified on The McBride Rewind podcast that he was never actually part of discussions to reprise his role as Oz in Hulu’s now-cancelled Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot.

“I was not part of those talks,” he said, making it clear that despite his connection to the original series, there were no formal conversations about bringing Oz back.

However, Green did have some involvement at an earlier stage. Sarah Michelle Gellar invited him to participate in a script reading for executives, but that did not develop into discussions about him joining the cast. Green has nevertheless remained open to revisiting Oz, saying he would love to see where the character is now if the story ever called for it.

“If they wrote an Oz story, I’d love to see where Oz is right now,” he said on the podcast.

His comments come after the reboot itself became one of the more unexpected casualties of television’s changing landscape.

The planned project, titled Buffy: New Sunnydale, was ordered to pilot by Hulu in 2025. Sarah Michelle Gellar was attached to return as Buffy Summers in a recurring role, while a new Slayer, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, was positioned at the center of the story. Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao was attached to direct and executive produce, with Nora and Lila Zuckerman serving as writers and showrunners.

Hulu ultimately decided not to move forward with the series in March 2026. Gellar later said in an interview with PEOPLE that the decision came as a surprise and criticized an executive involved with the project who, according to her, had never watched the original series and was not a fan of it.

Reports also indicated that Hulu felt the initial pilot played too young and was too small in scale. The project subsequently changed, including a rewrite intended to make it bigger and more mature for a streaming audience.

For now, the sun does not seem to be rising in Sunnydale, but Green’s willingness to revisit Oz leaves at least one door open should the franchise ever find its way back.
