‘Not My Joke’- Ricky Gervais Debunks Allegations After Nurse Suspended Over Viral Comment

Comedians have an unspoken rulebook, scribbled somewhere between a smoky comedy club greenroom and a half-empty pint glass,if a joke is truly offensive, truly daring, and truly funny, you might as well admit you wrote it. In fact, stand-ups often treat ownership of a scandalous punchline like a badge of honor. And if you happen to be Ricky Gervais, you typically own the joke, even if it makes half the internet gasp.

But this time? Not so fast.

The comedian has found himself in the unusual position of publicly clarifying a punchline he insists never came from his mouth.

Ricky Gervais says the offensive joke was never his

Taking to X, Ricky Gervais addressed an ongoing claim directly, posting:

“Not that it matters, but I'd just like to point out that this isn't my ‘joke’ either. I've never said anything like this in a sketch, a screenplay, stand-up or privately.”

The clarification followed reports surrounding James Murray, a nurse who had worked for two decades at St Andrews Community Hospital in Fife, Scotland. Murray was suspended for six months after making disturbing remarks about children.

During a tribunal with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, Murray reportedly claimed he was repeating a joke while associating with Gervais. The situation quickly escalated beyond the comment itself. According to tribunal reports, Murray became involved in a heated dispute with a female colleague, shouting offensive language and making a rude gesture in front of other staff.

Over the years, Ricky Gervais has built a reputation for saying the unsayable through brutal awards-show monologues or stand-up specials that gleefully poke at cultural taboos. At the Golden Globe Awards, he famously roasted Hollywood’s elite, even made fun of the show he was hosting himself, but he rarely apologizes.

Yet while Gervais was busy swatting away a punchline that wandered into his name like a stray cat, his real-life ventures have been unfolding in a far quieter corner of the world.

Beyond the controversy: Ricky Gervais’ expanding ventures

While the comedian was busy distancing himself from an internet-misattributed joke, his off-stage projects have been expanding into surprisingly artisanal territory. A Yorkshire distillery he co-owns, Ellers Farm Distillery, recently launched a single malt whisky called Three Ridings.

The whisky arrives alongside a four-part documentary tracing its creation, something that Ricky Gervais is actively involved with. Even further becoming the face of the brand with his posters all around London. Filmed across Castleford, Masham, and Stamford Bridge, the series leans heavily into the philosophy that flavor should always take precedence over efficiency.

Meanwhile, Gervais continues juggling multiple entertainment projects. Fans are still following updates on After Life, his stand-up tour Mortality, and the upcoming animated project Alley Cats, proving that the comedian’s portfolio stretches well beyond stand-up.

In the end, the situation is a peculiar reminder of the internet’s strange sense of authorship: jokes travel faster than their creators, and sometimes they arrive with the wrong name attached.
