Gal Gadot became synonymous with Wonder Woman after first appearing as Diana Prince in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice before leading two solo films. But the end of her DC chapter was far less heroic, arriving amid the studio’s sweeping reboot under James Gunn and Peter Safran and the departure of several major stars.

Now, Gadot has revealed that watching Henry Cavill and Patty Jenkins leave the franchise shaped how she understood her own fate as Wonder Woman.

Gal Gadot did not mince words when discussing the departures that preceded her own from the DC Universe.

During her appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, she said, “The Henry situation was not handled elegantly, to say the least. Same with Patty.” 

Referring to Henry Cavill’s Superman exit and Patty Jenkins’ departure from Wonder Woman 3, Gadot explained that she had already seen how both were treated before her own future with the franchise became uncertain. That experience, she suggested, made the eventual end of her Wonder Woman era far less surprising.

Cavill’s situation had been particularly turbulent. After his Superman return was teased through his post-credits appearance in Black Adam, the actor announced that he would reprise the role, only for those plans to be scrapped after James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios. Gunn subsequently moved forward with a younger Superman for the new DC Universe, ultimately casting David Corenswet in the role. Jenkins, meanwhile, departed Wonder Woman 3 after her proposed story was not moving forward under the new regime.

There is a distinctly Hollywood quality to the whole saga: a franchise changes hands, yesterday’s future plans become tomorrow’s discarded drafts, and actors learn what is happening partly by watching who else is being ushered through the exit door.

For Gal Gadot, however, the decision now appears to be about more than the DC reboot. Her relationship with the character stretches back to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016, followed by Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman 1984 and appearances across the wider DCEU. Her final appearance as Diana came in The Flash in 2023, but Gadot has now indicated that even an opportunity to make Wonder Woman 3 again would probably not bring her back. 

The reason is considerably more personal. Gadot explained that she now has four children attending different schools and that committing to another massive superhero production would mean stepping away from her family for an extended period.

 “It doesn’t work for my life anymore at this point,” she said. 

Her next chapter could hardly be more different. Gadot stars in Kevin Macdonald’s The Runner, a psychological action thriller arriving on Prime Video on September 2. She plays Maia Marten, a high-powered London attorney whose son is abducted during her morning run. A mysterious caller then forces her to keep moving through London while following a series of increasingly dangerous instructions.
