“Not a Single Paycheck”: Dylan Sprouse Recalls Receiving Just 5 Cents for ‘Suite Life of Zack & Cody’

For Dylan Sprouse, growing up on the Disney Channel meant spending some of his most formative years inside the Tipton Hotel, playing the mischievous Zack Martin alongside his twin brother Cole. From 2005 to 2008, the sitcom turned the brothers into household names, with Dylan's quick-witted portrayal of Zack becoming one of the defining performances of Disney Channel's golden era. The series eventually spawned The Suite Life on Deck, extending the brothers' television journey until 2011.
However, the nostalgia attached to the franchise comes with a rather unexpected financial revelation. Sprouse has now opened up about what he actually received from the success of the show, and the amount is considerably smaller than its popularity might suggest.

In an interview on his former Disney co-star Phill Lewis' Wildmen podcast, Dylan Sprouse opened up about the financial circumstances surrounding the sitcom. Sprouse agreed that the show had been treated as an unusual case by Disney Channel executives, describing it as “extremely popular, but also extremely underfunded.” He then revealed that the only residual payment he had ever received for the franchise came from its Hannah Montana crossover episode.
“The only residual check I have ever received for ‘The Suite Life’ at all was a crossover episode with ‘Hannah Montana’ for five cents. I am not joking,” he said.

Reflecting on the amount, he added, “Imagine that. In a time where residuals would have been great,” before pointing out that he had not received another paycheck in residuals despite the show's popularity. Lewis, who played the Tipton Hotel's famously strict manager Marion Moseby, also discussed how the cast's contracts reportedly allowed the production to film continuously throughout a calendar year while counting the episodes as a single television season.
The revelation becomes even more striking when considered alongside the show's reach. Lewis noted that the two Suite Life series aired in 90 countries, with episodes frequently repeated several times a day. Sprouse also recalled that the showrunner, Danny Kallis, had once informed the cast that the sitcom was outperforming The Sopranos in ratings.
Dylan Sprouse is not convinced a Suite Life reboot would work without the original cast
The revelation also brings renewed attention to Dylan Sprouse's complicated relationship with the idea of revisiting his Disney Channel days. Although the actor remains fond of his former castmates and has expressed interest in working with them again, he is not particularly enthusiastic about bringing Zack and Cody back for another series. Speaking on the same Wildmen episode, he pointed to the growing trend of Disney Channel revivals, arguing that they often leave out important members of the original ensemble.
“I'm seeing all of these older Disney Channel shows get their reboot, but the reboot's always sans this and this person,” Sprouse explained.

His comments reflect why The Suite Life of Zack & Cody remains such a recognizable part of Disney Channel's legacy. For Sprouse, the series represents more than a familiar character or a successful childhood acting credit. It is also a chapter of his life that he would rather preserve than recreate.
With the five-cent revelation adding an unexpected dimension to the show's legacy, fans have another reason to revisit the sitcom.
